Dante's life is about to change on General Hospital

With a change in Lulu's condition and the news that the character is being recast, General Hospital fans can expect all-new drama for Dante and Sam.

Life for the pair known as "Sante" has been going along smoothly for way too long, so a shake-up is due. Lulu was Dante's first wife and is the mother of his teenage son, Rocco. If Lulu hadn't fallen into that coma back in 2020, Dante and Lulu might have reconciled, and Dante and Sam would not have found love together.

However, Lulu slipped into a coma before she could tell Dante that she loved him, and Dante eventually moved on with Sam. Now, Dante and Rocco live in Sam's penthouse with Sam's kids, Danny and Scout, creating one big happy family. That's an aspect of Dante's life that actor Dominic Zamprogna loves.

"The times where we get to play that blended family element has been so interesting," Zamprogna told Soap Opera Digest. "It's interesting playing a dad to a kid who isn’t your son. So, the whole thing has been great."

Dante without Lulu

Zamprogna has enjoyed the last few Lulu-less years, as it has brought out other aspects of the character he began playing back in 2009. The actor left GH in 2018 but returned in 2020. While Zamprogna was away, Dante was on a WSB assignment that left him brainwashed with PTSD. He pushed Lulu away during that time and insisted on a divorce.

Dante eventually wanted Lulu back, but she was dating high school teacher Dustin. After an explosion at the Floating Rib, Dustin was killed, and Lulu's injuries resulted in the coma she is still in today—four years later. Dante has had to stand on his own without Lulu ever since.

"It was interesting to see who he was without her because you saw who he was before her, but then he spent so much time with her and it started to feel like he was losing his own identity a little bit," Zamprogna said.

While Zamprogna loves the Sante pairing and enjoys working with Kelly Monaco, he also said he looks forward to the angst that's still to come.

As of now, Lulu's liver is failing, so things look bleak, but the miracle they need could be on its way and upend Sam and Dante's lives forever.
