Is General Hospital’s Brick a regular Joe or something otherworldly?

Supernatural beings are nothing new to soap operas. Heck, General Hospital even once had an alien on the show in an amazing story. While its spin-off series, Port Charles, dealt with vampires and angels, the main show has dabbled in science fiction with very few supernatural occurrences except perhaps for the occasional ghostly appearance. However, Sonny’s (Maurice Benard) trusted surveillance and security guru, Brick (Stephen A. Smith), may be something more than he appears.

He knows things

Bear with us here. It’s obvious that a lot of what Brick does is mainly supply characters with plot information. However, let’s take that one step further. What do we know about Brick? It’s been rumored that he was a former spy, and his computer skills are perhaps better than that of Spinelli (Bradford Anderson). But beyond those tidbits, we know next to nothing about the guy.

Yet, he seems to have the goods on everyone. He recently mentioned to Isaiah (Sawandi Wilson), “I heard some questionable things about your family,” and hoped that the doctor wasn’t part of that. Sure, he could use computers to find out almost anything, but that seemed like it was a little more than surfing the Internet. It felt like Brick knew something on a more fundamental level.

Is he an angel?

On Port Charles, Rafe Kovich (Brian Gaskill) was an angel who was sent here to battle the vampire, Caleb Morley (Michael Easton). Lucy Coe (Lynn Herring) turned out to belong to a long line of vampire slayers, too. So, the concept of supernatural beings existing in the GH universe is not unprecedented.

Brick seems to arrive just when he’s needed, then leaves with no fanfare. It’s almost as if he’s Sonny’s personal guardian angel, sent down to protect the don from the forces of evil. Yes, we know, Sonny’s a criminal. But he serves a purpose by defending Port Charles against those who would seek to overrun and control it.

Recently, Brick gave Sonny and Jason (Steve Burton) the location of a hitman named Soliski. You know, the one who planted the incendiary bomb in Sonny’s penthouse that missed its mark and badly burned Michael (Chad Duell). When he showed up, the master security advisor was wearing an unusual purple suit. Brick’s usually dressed to the nines, but this suit screamed for attention, which is odd for someone whose line of work requires discretion, not standing out in a crowd.

So far, Brick has been nothing but loyal to Sonny and hasn’t done anything (that we know of) that would be considered nefarious. He’s got that air of mystery, and maybe the powers that be like it that way. Or maybe he’s just something more than human…
