The August 30, 2024, episode of General Hospital ended with a literal bang as Sonny shocked John and shot him point-blank in the chest. To make sure he did the job right, the mobster stood over John's seemingly lifeless body and shot again.

General Hospital's Friday cliffhanger

While fans have to wait until Tuesday to see if John lives, due to an encore episode airing on Labor Day, it's hard to see John surviving two gunshots at such close range.

Adam Harrington, who joined the GH cast in January, dropped a hint about his character's fate after Friday's cliffhanger aired.

"Good night all," Harrington tweeted on X (formerly Twitter), along with a photo of a beautiful sunset.

Fans immediately responded with well wishes for Harrington under the assumption that he was saying goodbye to John and GH. "You were a great addition to the cast. Pity you couldn’t stay longer. We were happy to have you on our screens! Thank you!" @pelorori90 tweeted.

X user @pontiacsue wrote: "I really liked you on GH. Thank you for making Jagger your own. It was a fun run, especially with Ava. Can't wait to see where you go next. I'll miss your blue eyes, Adam."

The end of a Port Charles era?

Fans were shocked when John "Jagger" Cates was reintroduced to the Port Charles scene this past winter. The character was originally played by Antonio Sabato Jr. from 1992 to 1995. Sabato reprised the role in 2008 on the spinoff series GH: Night Shift.

Harrington's John arrived back in town as an FBI agent working to bring down the Pikeman Group. The audience soon learned he'd had Jason Morgan under his thumb since 2021. He had threatened to turn Carly in on RICO charges unless Jason faked his death and did John's bidding.

Once the Pikeman story ended, John's obsession with bringing down Sonny came to the forefront. John never forgot that Sonny drugged John's late wife, Karen, and hired her as a stripper in Sonny's club more than 30 years ago when she was underage. John was determined to make Sonny pay, even if he had to use his badge and break the law to do it.

However, it looks like John was no match for Sonny Corinthos. When John tried using Kristina's recent tragedy to get Sonny to confess to his crimes, it was a bridge too far for Sonny, so he shot John in cold blood.
