The General Hospital fandom was left gutted after the October 31 episode when Nancy Lee Grahn offered a phenomenal tour de force performance as Alexis learned that Sam had died and said her final goodbyes.
Heartbreaking moments for Nancy Lee Grahn
Before the episode aired, Grahn took to X (formerly Twitter) to describe how difficult it was to play those scenes but how easy the last two decades have been working with Kelly Monaco.

"As hard as it may be for #gh viewers to watch today's episodes and the episodes to follow, it was equally as hard for me and my casemates to play," Grahn wrote.
During the scenes, Alexis held her cold, lifeless daughter in her arms and told her about the night she was born. Although Alexis was a teenager and had to give her up, she was so grateful for Sam coming into her life as an adult.
Grahn also took to Instagram to repeat her sentiments about working with Monaco while sharing a final photo of Alexis and her daughters that Monaco had shared several weeks ago.
"Being Kelly Monaco’s TV mom was always effortless and the love was real," Grahn wrote.
General Hospital's mother-daughter teams
Just last week, GH showed us just how strong the bond was between Alexis and the daughter she had given up for adoption, as well as how strong the bond was between Sam and her daughter, Scout (Cosette Abinante).
Scout was scared for her mom, knowing she would undergo surgery, while Alexis was proud of Sam for giving a part of herself — a part of her liver — so that Lulu would have a chance at life.
Just before Sam's cardiac arrest, Alexis was beaming after learning that Sam and Dante were engaged. Fans knew what was coming, but Alexis didn't. The scenes that followed as Alexis learned Sam was gone were heart-wrenching as GH fans remembered the relationship between Alexis and Sam.
As Grahn said in her tweet, the next few episodes may prove to be just as difficult to watch as the citizens of Port Charles say goodbye to a beloved character of 21 years.
