From 2000 to 2013, soap opera fans could get their fix daily on the cable and satellite channel Soapnet. General Hospital, as well as several other shows that were currently airing at the time, along with defunct nighttime soaps, could be found, with the current ones usually airing the same day they were broadcast. Kin Shriner (Scotty) took to social media to share a rumor about a possible new soap channel that’s in the works.
He teased a new network
On X, formerly Twitter, Shriner responded to a post that said, “I wish I was around back then to see those early years with Laura, Scotty, and Bobbie. I’ve seen random clips here and there, but it would have been amazing to be able to see the whole story back how they started.”
This was most likely in response to his previous post in which he opened up about what cars the GH actors bought back in 1978. His initial response was, “On u tube.” But he later reposted the tweet, commenting, “There will be a soap network soon like TCM that shows old soaps like old movies, and who is left standing will talk about them and how it all changed!!!!”
TCM, of course, stands for Turner Classic Movies, which is an amazing channel that plays all kinds of films from yesteryear, along with some more recent ones. This got the fans discussing the concept of a new soap opera channel.
@AmyJRomine commented, “I really hope so! Right now, all we have is YouTube. 🙏 It would be cool if they remastered them. Make ‘em shiny and new again!” @AndreaHBaker pointed out one way to watch GH episodes, as well as reminiscing about Soapnet, writing, “There was a cable channel called SoapNet. Pretty groundbreaking for its day, repeating that day’s GH at night. Now, there’s a General Hospital channel on Freevee. Playing more recent episodes from the last 6 years or so.”
There’s huge fan interest in it

@Cheritech reacted to Shriner’s post with: “Yes!! That would be awesome ❤️. Who better than you to tell all the cool stories? ❤️ 🍸🍸🥰 We miss you Kin as Scotty on #GH Hope to see you at the Nurse’s Ball with Lucy [Lynn Herring]!”
Another fan, @StaatsMelissa, agreed and responded, “There seriously needs to be a network like that. I would love to watch the old episodes. I’ve been watching soaps including GH sense I was a toddler. I even saw Luke & Laura’s wedding when it first aired. I was little but I still remember watching it.”
And many of Shriner’s followers responded about what they’d like to see on a new soap channel with @OrdinaryfoolNJ writing, “I need that! I loved the old soap network that showed old shows - but I hope we get more of the super old shows (if they exists) - not just the late 70's...early 80's on.”
While a cursory internet search didn’t reveal any info on a potential new soap channel, the interest is definitely there. Back in 2021, one fan remarked on a message board, “There’s Networks dedicated to game shows and movies about games. Networks dedicated to Crime shows. I think there is a market for a network dedicated to defunct soap operas.”
Only time will tell if a new soap channel debuts.
