When General Hospital's Lucas wheeled his sister Sam into surgery in what was likely Kelly Monaco's last moment, bringing the character to life after 21 years, Sam flashed the 'I love you' sign as the gurney rounded the corner. It was an iconic moment for an iconic character and actress. Now, Monaco has confirmed what fans suspected all along.
General Hospital's Kelly Monaco left a special message
After that last scene aired with Sam's loved ones gathered around on October 24, fans took to social media to show their love for Monaco and Sam. That final move touched the Sam fandom, with some wondering if Monaco improvised the moment.

"Ok, I really need to know if that 'I love you' sign was scripted or if @kellymonaco1 threw that in there for us," wrote X (formerly Twitter) user @fangirl_810.
Monaco spotted the tweet and replied with four simple words, "It was not scripted."
Forming the 'I love you' sign with her hands is a signature Sam move, so it was fitting that Monaco gave that last gift to her fans, ostensibly sending out her love for all the support through the years.
Sam's last stand
Sam McCall performed the most selfless act of her life, agreeing to be Lulu Spencer's liver donor, knowing the surgery had a low chance of success. Still, she believed any decent person would do what she was doing, as her loved ones thanked her for her sacrifice before her surgery began.
The October 25 episode features Lulu and Sam's family and friends waiting for an update on the surgeries while praying for a positive outcome. Everyone fears for Lulu's life but feels Sam will be just fine.
The writing has been on the wall since August that Sam would not be fine, but Lulu would live and emerge from her four-year coma. After news broke that Monaco had been let go from the soap she's called home since 2003 and that the character would be killed, many fans knew in their hearts that Sam would become Lulu's liver donor.
According to Monaco's mother, Sam and Lulu's surgery will take place four weeks from the day Monaco taped her last scenes as Sam. Carmina Monaco tweeted thanks to GH fans for supporting her daughter on September 27.
"I want to take this moment to reach out to Kelly’s incredible fans and express my deepest gratitude for the unwavering love, loyalty, and support you’ve shown her throughout her time on General Hospital," she wrote. "On this final day, just four days shy of the anniversary of her first episode on October 1, 2003, Kelly will close the door of her dressing room for the last time."
Monaco herself has posted on social media that she will release a statement about what happened behind the scenes at GH, but as of this writing, she has yet to do so. Soap Central will keep you informed if Monaco does indeed speak out.
