General Hospital's Kristina has been going through it recently. She volunteered to be an egg donor and a surrogate for Molly and T.J., but with just three weeks left of her pregnancy, Kristina fell from a Metro Court window into the pool below. While Kristina lived, the baby girl died soon after birth.

How General Hospital's Kate Mansi copes with Kristina's problems

Mansi had been away from the soap scene for a few years when she was approached about taking over the role of Kristina. "Our executive producer Frank Valentini said, 'This storyline has to do with endometriosis and surrogacy, and you’ll be an LGBTQIA+ character,'" Mansi told Women's World. "He also said it would be a very juicy couple of years of huge, heavy-hitting story. I was like, 'I’m sold. I don’t need to know anything else,' because I knew these were stories I’d be honored to tell."

When the story reached a fever pitch after the baby died, Mansi had to find a way to deal with the heavy drama when the cameras stopped rolling.

"Kristina not only lost her baby, but almost lost her own life, fell out of a five-story freaking window, and almost went to jail," Mansi said. "So my fiancé, my friends, my family, everybody knows: Don’t ask me or talk to me about anything until I can come up for air. I scale back on my social plans during these times and use my weekends to gather my energy so I can go back in for battle, essentially."

Leaving Abigail behind

Mansi made a soap name for herself in 2011 when she took on the role of Days of our Lives' Abigail Deveraux DiMera. She played Abby off and on until 2020, sometimes alternating with Marci Miller, who became Abby when Mansi left the show in 2016.

It looked like AnnaLynne McCord was cast as the new Abby this summer, but everything now points to McCord's character being an imposter. Still, Mansi wants to see some sort of happy ending for her first soap character, who was allegedly killed in 2022.

"Abigail and Chad have such a beautiful love story that she should get another run at it," Mansi said. "I loved playing her, and it was very hard for me to let go of her. Billy Flynn and I have really great chemistry that lent itself to great stories, so there’s a lot more to play and a lot more to keep exploring."

For now, Mansi is busy with Kristina, as Sonny and Alexis' daughter tries to navigate life after an unspeakable tragedy.
