Adam J. Harrington, who joined General Hospital in February of this year as the new John "Jagger" Cates, has confirmed that his run on the 61-year-old soap has come to an end.
Adam J. Harrington says goodbye to General Hospital
After Sonny shot John twice in the chest at the close of the August 30, 2024, episode, fans wondered if they had truly seen the end of a character first introduced to the Port Charles canvas in 1992.
Not long after the episode aired, Harrington posted a cryptic message on X (formerly Twitter). He tweeted a photo of a sunset while simply saying, "Good night all..."

On the evening of September 1, Harrington elaborated on his GH status.
"Well, @GeneralHospital it was a BLAST, literally!" Harrington wrote. To @valentinifrank, producers and writers. Thank you for the SHOT at joining your world. I loved it. To the phenomenal cast and crew. It was an honor to witness the CALIBER of your work. Now, seriously, I will miss you all."
Goodbye from a co-star
Charles Mesure, who plays bad boy WSB agent Jack Brennan, offered words of praise for Harrington in multiple tweets.
"At the risk of stating the obvious — @adamjharrington did an absolutely incredible job on GH," Mesure wrote. "Superb actor, superb presence on set, superb guy to be around. We were so lucky to have him. Cheers, Adam."
Mesure also retweeted Harrington's goodbye and offered a little insight into what it was like to work with the actor.
"And this post reminds me — something you could never tell from watching Agent Cates — Adam's one of the funniest actors you'll ever find on a set — when Brennan came down to the Metro Court bar to find Carly, Harrington did the most perfect spit take ever — we shoulda kept it!!!!"
The end of a General Hospital era?
Fans were shocked when the character once known as Jagger re-entered the Port Charles scene this past winter. John "Jagger" Cates was famously played by Antonio Sabato Jr. from 1992 to 1995 and again on the spinoff series GH: Night Shift in 2008.
For a while, it looked like FBI agent John Cates would be paired with either Anna or Carly, but he ended up having a brief fling with Ava instead. John's obsession with bringing down Sonny led Port Charles's most famous mobster to kill him. Will Sonny get away with murder again? Time will tell.
