While General Hospital has been on the air since 1963, the original Star Trek series only ran from 1966 to 1969. However, there have been various iterations down through the decades, including a 1970s animated series, several theatrical films, and many sequel and prequel TV shows. Viewers can’t seem to get enough Star Trek, and one fan boldly went where no fan has gone before: stating that newer Star Trek shows should be more like a soap opera.
Star Trek needs to have more of a Soap Opera pacing
On the new social media platform Bluesky, a fan going by @eva.computer posted an interesting take on current Star Trek shows: “The problem with modern Star Trek media is it has a fundamental misunderstanding of the subject matter. The directors are CW and Michael Bay coded when they should be General Hospital or Days of Our Lives coded.” The meaning was that current shows are far more fast-paced with jump cuts than they need to be and should take a cue from General Hospital to slow things down a bit.

@hamfast42.bsky.social responded with a comment about Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, a prequel series starring Anson Mount (Hell on Wheels) as the Enterprise’s original captain, Christopher Pike. “It just fundamentally GETS what makes Star Trek great and just adds humor,” they wrote.
User @mithemer.bsky.social responded, “[I] do wonder how well that would work with people of today. I'm a very late millennial and have given the classic Star Trek and Deep Space 9 attempts but unfortunately, they bored me to death. Discovery was watchable to me on the other hand, albeit the first season was the best.” The fan then went on to praise Seth McFarlane’s spoof/love letter to Star Trek with, “The Orville is glorious.”
Another fan going by @homotronic.bsky.social, who wasn’t quite sure if they were a millennial, responded, “[Star Trek: Discovery] was so jarring and frustrating. The camera doesn't always need to be in motion, the music doesn't always need to tell me what to feel, the jump cuts don't need to fight for my attention, and the characters don't need The Biggest Feeling every episode.”
Perhaps, like General Hospital, fans of the science fiction series may want a storytelling pace that allows for character growth over the years. However, for that to work right, the series would have to air multiple times a week if not every day — like General Hospital.
A hilarious comment by @tunaghost.bsky.social , who seems to know a little something about the post, read, “I’m assuming this means “‘capable of shooting an entire episode with three sets in two hours.’”
Whether the showrunners for Star Trek shows take the fan’s advice to heart remains to be seen, although it would be fun to see Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) team up with James T. Kirk (William Shatner).
You can watch new episodes of General Hospital on ABC and Hulu.
