It’s a sad day for General Hospital fans as yet another favorite bites the dust at the hands of a homicidal maniac. Granted, Dex Heller (Even Hofer) wasn’t nearly on the canvas as long as Sam McCall (Kelly Monaco), but he had such great potential. He could have turned out to be Jason Morgan’s (Steve Burton) long-lost son, or we could have seen him team up with Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) once again to perhaps save the mob boss’ life and restart their friendship. So much story potential is now down the drain with Dex’s death. Hofer opened up about his exit with his usual cheery optimism.
Dex dies on General Hospital
Officer Dex Heller, former mobster-in-training on General Hospital, had confiscated some booze from a group of rowdy college students and got stabbed in the back while dumping them out. Unlike Rafe Hernandez (Galen Gerring) on Days of Our Lives, who was stabbed in the back and landed in a coma, Dex got hit in the fleshy part on the lower side of his back where there are no organs or anything major. He was set for a full recovery until he suddenly flatlined, and Dr. Isaiah Gannon (Sawandi Wilson) and Head Nurse Elizabeth Webber (Rebecca Herbst) tried to save his life. Sadly, they failed, and Dex died.

Evan Hofer spoke to US Weekly in a video interview and opened up about the demise of his beloved character. “It really was a second home to me for the last two and a half years and I…couldn't have loved it anymore or love the people anymore,” he stated, adding, “But it's time for the next adventure.”
He Didn’t Have Any Grave Doubts
Hofer was excited because several of his final scenes were with supposedly reformed villain Cyrus Renault, played by Walking Dead and Sons of Anarchy alum Jeff Kober. Of his scene partner, Hofer stated, “He's this, you know, serial killer and kind of, you know, monster of a character. But Jeff is such an incredible man and an incredible actor.” He admired his costar so much that he knew he had to bring his A-Game to the scenes. “I told Jeff that too,” he remarked, adding, “I was like, ‘I prepped extra hard for you ‘cause I knew you were gonna be here and I…was showing up for you.’ "
He particularly liked the twist in which Dex got what was a treatable wound and ended up dead anyway. He considered the scenario a “twist of Fate” because some time ago, when he worked for Sonny, Dex was supposed to stab Cyrus in the hospital, but that got stopped before it happened. But now it seems that Cyrus may have been the one to do Dex in, whether the stabbing, overdose, or both, and Hofer praised the irony.
Hofer explained that he was prepared as any acting job is finite. He was thankful for every day he was able to be on the show, and no matter what his dialogue was, “Whether or not I was gonna walk in and say ‘You got it boss!’ 18 times that day or whether I had an incredible emotional monologue, [or] we got to do cool action scenes, [or] whatever I was doing…I was just grateful for every day.”
