General Hospital's Drew Quartermaine has taken quite a turn in the last year, going from heroic Navy SEAL to a sleazy politician who slept with his nephew's wife and sees nothing wrong with his act, among other questionable acts.

The transformation has turned Drew into one of the most hated men in Port Charles — on-screen and off. Drew's family and former friends can't believe who he has become, and the fans sometimes wonder if the Drew who returned to Port Charles in 2021 is an imposter.

After all, Drew not only slept with Willow (Katelyn MacMullen), but he also had frequent hate sex with her mother, Nina (Cynthia Watros), even after the first time he and Willow kissed. Drew also paid off Cody to keep him from spilling his secret to the press and tried to screw Curtis out of a promised CEO position. He also attempted to keep Carly (Laura Wright) and Sonny (Maurice Benard) from seeing their hospitalized son — for Willow's sake, of course.
Through all of this, Drew has made Willow feel like he is the only person she can count on —after stalking her for months before she finally broke down and had sex with him on the playroom floor the night his daughter's mother died.
Drew's a Quartermaine, right?
Cameron Mathison sees this all as a journey for his character but also doesn't feel that Drew has done anything worse than other members of his dysfunctional clan.
"It was a dramatic change," Mathison told Women's World in an interview. "What I noticed the most is how the rest of Port Charles talks about Drew. People hate him! With all the things the Quartermaines have done, with all Jason and Sonny have done, a little infidelity is making Drew the evilest person alive."
Mathison was recently surprised to learn just how much fans now hate Drew. "I’ve never had people hate me so much,” Mathison admitted. "I went to Christmas Con, and almost everybody in line was livid at Drew. I’m trying to take smiley pictures with a Christmas tree in the background, and they’re throwing things at me."
Still, the actor thinks there is hope for Drew — and even hope for Drew and Willow despite their auspicious beginnings as a pairing.
"I think there’ll be redemption for Drew, but I’ve always said, no matter what your story is, you’ve got to look at the big picture," Mathison said before adding his thoughts on Drew and Willow. "In soaps, sometimes love stories start in complete dysfunction, mistakes, and betrayal and everybody freaks out… but then the couple comes together. It could be Drew and Willow, against the world."
