General Hospital fans were stunned when news broke that Kelly Monaco was exiting the soap. Not only that, but the powers that be have chosen to kill Sam off at some point this fall. Sam's death is sure to be emotional for fans and characters alike, and we think GH just gave us a hint about how it will happen.
Did General Hospital just drop an anvil?
Sam McCall is well known for being an expert scuba diver. When Jason Morgan was shot and kicked into the river in 2012, Sam was determined to find him alive and donned her scuba attire to search the murky waters for the man she loved.
Now, Sam is ready to dive into the river again to find the gun her mother tossed during an impulsive moment. Because Sam wants to prove that Alexis didn't kill John Cates, she knows finding that gun will show it was not fired the night John died.

Dante warned Sam how dangerous diving into the river could be, noting that professional dive teams couldn't even find the gun. Sam assured Dante she could take care of herself, but is she correct?
Will Sam drown in the river?
As Sam debated whether to take that dive, the scene seemed ominous. Does GH plan to kill this longtime beloved character off by having her sacrifice her life for her mother's freedom?
When Sam first arrived on the Port Charles scene, she was a con woman who quickly made an enemy of Alexis. After Alexis and Sam discovered they were mother and daughter, they forged a close relationship, with Sam willing to do just about anything for the mother who gave her up for adoption as a teenager.
If Sam dies because she was trying to secure Alexis' freedom, the guilt and blame game will reverberate throughout Port Charles. Kristina will feel responsible because she took the gun from Sonny in the first place. Alexis will feel responsible because she threw the gun into the river.
But what about Sonny? He was the person who killed John and allowed Alexis to take the fall without a hint of self-awareness that he could have solved Alexis' problem with the truth. Could Sam's death be the impetus for Sonny to do the right thing and confess?
While a drowning death in the river will have a ripple effect throughout town as Port Charles citizens mourn, it's also a perfect soap death. In all likelihood, a body won't be found, leaving the door wide open for a Sam return down the line. If GH takes this route, it will once again prove that few soap deaths are forever.
