Is General Hospital grooming Jack Brennan to be the next Scorpio?

Back in the 1980s, General Hospital had some major hero power with Luke (Anthony Geary) and Laura Spencer (Genie Francis). Fighting alongside them was super spy Robert Scorpio (Tristan Rogers), a former agent with the World Security Bureau (WSB). He later became police commissioner of Port Charles and is currently the district attorney.

But now the WSB has a satellite office in town with Jack Brennan (Charles Mesure) in charge, and while he seemingly started off as a villain, he’s headed for hero territory.

Holding on for a hero

Luke was unceremoniously killed off-screen and didn’t get the heroic end he deserved despite having saved the world several times over. In recent years, Robert’s been treated like comic relief. He hasn’t been given a meaty storyline — that is, until the recent revelation that Sasha Corbin (Sofia Mattsson) is his daughter with Holly Sutton (Emma Samms). In addition to laying into Holly for keeping such a big secret from him, we finally got to see the old Robert with his reaction. He had that glimmer in his eye that he always had when solving cases in the past, and it was nice to see Scorpio back in form.

When we first saw Brennan, he seemed to be up to no good and was in cahoots with Valentin Cassadine (James Patrick Stuart). But after their whole plan with Pikeman failed and Valentin went off the grid, Brennan cooled his heels in jail for a while. Now, reinstated as a WSB agent, he’s a fixture in Port Charles and runs the satellite office. After Anna Devane (Finola Hughes) and Laura begged him to help find Lucky Spencer (Jonathan Jackson), Brennan decided to do the right thing and used his resources off-book to help them.

Now, Anna has asked for his help once again to find Valentin and his daughter, Charlotte Cassadine (Scarlett Fernandez). Charlotte’s mother, Lulu Falconeri (Alexa Havins), just had a liver transplant, and her daughter needs to be informed. Brennan, once again, will most likely step up and help out even though he said he couldn’t. He’s also got a soft spot for Carly Spencer (Laura Wright) and seems to do whatever she asks of him.

He's got big shoes to fill

While Robert was always a hero from the get-go, Brennan’s got a hero’s journey ahead of him. He’s tough, charming, dangerous, and knows a million ways to kill or incapacitate someone…many of the prerequisites for being a super spy. Even Robert's former spy boss Sean Donely (John Reilly) started off as good, turned bad and stole Aztec treasure, then turned good again.

Let’s face it: At some point, Robert will retire, and we won’t have many heroes left in Port Charles. Brennan’s in a position of great power and needs to prove his great responsibility to become the hero he’s destined to be.
