How will General Hospital’s Gio react when he learns the true nature of Sonny’s business

General Hospital's Giovanni Mazza as Gio.

On General Hospital, Gio Palmieri (Giovanni Mazza) debuted in May when he played the violin at the wedding of Brook Lynn Quartermaine (Amanda Setton) and Harrison Chase (Josh Swickard). He was instantly well-liked among the people in Port Charles, having grown up with many of the characters in Bensonhurst. One of Gio’s ardent supporters has been Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard), who’s helped the boy throughout his life, including paying for his education. Gio considers Sonny an honorary uncle and idolizes him, but lately Gio has been starting to hear stories about people who aren’t too happy with Sonny.

General Hospital’s Gio only knows Sonny’s light side

Gio, a cheerful and friendly kid, thinks nothing but good things about Sonny. However, it’s clear that he doesn’t know his “uncle” is the mafia don of the Northeastern seafront. Most of Sonny’s kids grew up aware of the violent nature of his business, except his daughter Kristina Corinthos-Davis (Kate Mansi), who tried to always see the best of him. She recently learned how violent Sonny could be when she saw him beating Dex Heller (Evan Hofer) within an inch of his life after Chase and Brook Lynn’s wedding. But it didn’t take her long to wrap her brain around Sonny’s sometimes unsavory business dealings.

Several people have come to accept Sonny for who he is, despite his violent nature, because they understand that he is the only thing standing between Port Charles and all-out chaos. Sonny not only defends his loved ones, but he also defends the city against rival mob organizations that would like nothing better than to take control of his territory. These opponents would be far less forgiving and generous than Sonny, and they would also allow prostitution and drugs to run rampant on the city’s streets. His love for his friends and family, and his fierce loyalty to them, makes him very likable, especially to people who only see that side of him.

Gio may have a difficult time accepting Sonny with his flaws

Gio is one of those people, and much like Kristina, he’s only ever known the lighter side of Sonny. On the September 20 episode of General Hospital, Gio asked Lois Cerullo (Rena Sofer) why Ned Quartermaine (Wally Kurth) and Sonny seemed at odds, and he noticed that others had not-so-nice things to say about Sonny, as well. Lois explained that rumors about Sonny exist, some of which are true and some of which are not, and at the end of the day, Sonny’s reliability, loyalty, and generosity make him the best person to have in your corner when the chips are down.

But if Gio learns that Sonny shot and killed FBI agent John “Jagger” Cates (Adam J. Harrington), his opinion might change. He might simply stay away from Sonny or, worse, feel animosity toward him for not being the man Gio thought he was. But Josslyn Jacks (Eden McCoy), Sonny’s former stepdaughter with Carly Spencer (Laura Wright), hates Sonny with a passion but reins it in because everyone around him, including Carly, accepts him for who he is. She holds back, and if Gio develops a dislike for Sonny, she may advise him to do the same thing.

If Gio sees Sonny do something nasty, like beating someone up, this might also color his opinion. But knowing the good side of Sonny, and perhaps with the counsel of Sonny’s son Michael Corinthos (Chad Duell), Kristina, and Carly, he’ll change his tune and return to embracing Sonny, dark side and all.
