How Anna’s relationship with Sonny and Jason has changed on General Hospital

General Hospital
Jason and Anna have a heart-to -heart on General Hospital.

On General Hospital, former super spy and current Port Charles police commissioner Anna Devane (Finola Hughes) has been foiling evildoers for decades. However, she previously worked in a lot of gray areas. Her checkered past includes being a double agent, fencing stolen goods, keeping quiet about the nefarious activities of several people, killing Carlos Rivera (Jeffrey Vincent Parise), and working with Robert Scorpio (Tristan Rogers) to pretend they’d killed supervillain Cesar Faison (Anders Hove)—but they'd secretly stowed him away in a bunker on Spoon Island as their own private prison, which isn’t quite legal.

She also married Duke Lavery (Ian Buchanan), who was a career mobster, and she often turned a blind eye to his criminal activities. And she fell in love with Valentin Cassadine (James Patrick Stuart), who continued to perform illegal schemes in secret. Although she turned him in to the FBI for being revealed as the head of Pikeman, she gave him ample warning to get out of town with his daughter, Charlotte (Scarlett Fernandez), on the July 16th episode.

With all that said, she was also friends with Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard), the don of the Northeastern Sea Front, because he supported her daughter, Robin (Kimberly McCullough), when Anna couldn’t be there herself. The two got even closer in 2023 and had a mutual respect for one another, both understanding that they were working on opposite sides of the fence. She also worked a few times with his enforcer, Jason Morgan (Steve Burton), and in 2024, the two teamed up to not only uncover Pikeman’s leadership, but also to attempt to stop FBI agent John “Jagger” Cates (Adam J. Harrington) from abusing his power because of his vendetta against Sonny.

But something has changed with Anna, and it’s not good. When Valentin had secretly tampered with Sonny’s bipolar medication, causing him to slowly start to come unhinged, Anna rethought her decision to be his friend and turn a blind eye on his business, as she had done for decades. His bad behavior was due to his medication issue, but she didn’t seem to allow that as an excuse and told him in no uncertain terms that if she gathered enough evidence on him committing a crime, she would arrest him.

Anna doesn’t seem to get the concept that his ex-wife Carly (Laura Wright) completely understands: Sonny is vital to the stability of Port Charles. He works to keep out drugs and prostitution, and although he did once allow Pikeman to run illegal arms through the city, he changed his mind and continued to disallow guns to be illegally flooded in. He also fends off opposing mob families that are far more nefarious than he ever could be. Sonny protects Port Charles, and Anna seems to have lost sight of that.

She’s also got a problem with Jason

After working successfully with Jason, she once again started rethinking one of her friendships, this time with him. On the September 10th episode, she thanked him for not telling Sonny about what had happened with Valentin because she knew that the mob boss would have her lover killed for messing with his meds. But the fact that Jason’s back working with Sonny has her disappointed, as she was hoping that with his fresh start, he’d be on her side of the law. Jason explained that he wouldn’t leave Sonny high and dry but would help her again if the need arose. He mentioned that they were friends, but she said she had to mull it over because she might not agree with that anymore.

Is General Hospital's Anna a hypocrite?

Considering all the illegal activities she’s either been complicit in or pretended she didn’t know about, Anna seems like something of a hypocrite as she passes judgment on Sonny and Jason. She firmly believes that Sonny was the one who killed Cates, and she wants to nail him on a murder charge. Yet she covered up her own crime of killing Carlos. Anna is displaying a double standard, and her former friends may end up paying the price. She helped Valentin evade the authorities but wouldn’t do the same for Sonny.

If she were to send Sonny up the river, it would cause criminal chaos in Port Charles, and Anna will be stuck between a rock and a hard place in trying to maintain order. A mob war between the other crime families could lay waste to the city, and she would finally have to admit that she needs Sonny and Jason to continue running their organization to help maintain the balance.
