At a warehouse on the pier, Sasha banged on the door, demanding to be let out. Sidwell was impressed with Sasha's feistiness and thought she was just like her mother. When Sidwell entered the warehouse, Sasha told him he had grabbed the wrong person. Sasha informed Sidwell that Holly would never give him the ransom so there was no sense keeping her. Sidwell said he only wanted back what Holly took.
"Holly couldn't care less about me. She dumped me on my grandmother and took off running cons across the globe. Is that what she did to you?" Sasha asked. Sidwell admitted that Holly pretended to be in love with him so she could take off with his diamonds. "The biggest con Holly ever ran was pretending to be a mother," Sasha said. She told Sidwell that she never even heard from her mother when she lost her husband and child.
Sasha suggested that Sidwell use her to get his diamonds back the right way, telling him she knew how to get him what he wanted. She thought she could bait Holly into showing her the diamonds. If Holly did that, Sasha knew she could get her hands on them and return them to Sidwell. Too bad Sidwell didn't fall for Sasha's tricks. "Like mother, like daughter," he said.
Robert insisted to Anna that he didn't want the police involved with Sasha's kidnapping. He just wanted to give Sidwell back the diamonds and take Sasha home. Anna wondered if Holly would just skip town without giving the diamonds back, but Robert was adamant that Holly would never do that.

Anna believed that Holly would leave town as she would assume that Robert would save the day by coming to Sasha's rescue.
A frantic Holly found Jason at Pozzulo's and asked to see Sonny. Jason told Holly it was a bad time, but she begged for her diamonds back. Jason told her she couldn't have them, but his tune changed when he learned that Sidwell had Sasha. "Once I have the diamonds, you'll never have to see me again," Holly said.
Jason gave Holly the diamonds back, and she checked to make sure they were all there. Jason told Holly he would help her find Sasha.
Brennan asked Carly why she had come to him rather than Sonny or Jason after Sasha had been kidnapped. Carly told Brennan that she didn't want to bother Jason or Sonny because they had just lost someone close to them. "I decided to trust you; don't make me regret it," Carly said.
Brennan tried to get Carly to leave, but she refused. Brennan explained that Sidwell had already seen her when he took Sasha. He didn't want Carly to get in any deeper. Carly was touched that Brennan was worried about her, but she finally left. Brennan then put a tail on Carly to protect her.
Soon, Anna, Robert, Jason, and Holly descended on Brennan's office. Holly handed Brennan the diamonds. "Here. Get my daughter back," she said. With Jason there, Anna immediately knew Holly had asked Sonny to fence the diamonds.
Brennan tried to get Anna off the case, but she was insistent. Robert and Holly also asked her to back off, so Anna finally relented. Robert demanded everything Brennan knew about Sidwell — and not the public information. Just then, Sidwell called Holly. Sasha assured Holly that she was fine, but Sidwell hung up quickly, promising more instructions.
Alexis asked Sonny how he managed to get through Morgan's death, knowing he could relate to losing a child. Sonny told her she had to do things one step at a time. Alexis was sure she could do what needed to be done to arrange a funeral, but how could she go on after that? Sonny told her she would get there, but Alexis disagreed. "I don't want to. I don't want to picture a world without my daughter in it," she said.
"It's a terrible thing for a parent to outlive their child. It's a freak of nature. A part of you is lost forever, and I'm not going to pretend that you'll ever get it back," Sonny acknowledged.
Alexis told Sonny that sometimes she looks at Scout and wonders if Sam looked like that when she was little. "I missed her entire childhood and her teens. Literally half her life, I missed. And now there is no time left. I should never have let her go," Alexis said.
Sonny pointed out how young Alexis was, but Alexis still felt she should have kept her. At the time, she believed Sam would have a wonderful life with loving parents. "I did what my father told me to do, but I shouldn't have done it because she had a terrible childhood. She had terrible parents, and she had to fight for everything she had," Alexis said. She blamed herself for Sam's childhood and felt she was being punished for it now.
Sonny didn't want Alexis to be so hard on herself. "Don't judge yourself by the girl you used to be. Give yourself credit for the woman you are now," Sonny said. Alexis admitted she tried making things up to Sam but wasn't sure it was enough.
Alexis said she didn't feel like a natural mother, but Sam was. "She was patient, she was firm, and she was loving," Alexis noted. Sonny stressed how kind Sam was. "Lulu needed help, and she didn't think twice. And you know why? Because she learned that from her mom," Sonny said.
Portia got ready for bed and told Curtis how difficult losing Sam was. Portia pointed out how well Sam was doing, making her death even more of a mystery. Portia described the moment Lucas realized Sam was gone and had to call Sam's time of death. "I saw the look on his face. I love medicine. I love my job, but sometimes it's really, really hard," Portia cried.
Portia admitted she felt funny questioning Lucas about Sam's surgery, but it was her job. Portia beat herself up over allowing Lucas to perform the surgery when it was against hospital policy. Curtis reminded Portia that Sam had wanted Lucas to be her surgeon. That didn't make a difference to Portia because she felt she should have known better as a professional.
Curtis told Portia that he had gone to see Alexis. He said she was doing as well as could be expected, but he was also worried about Dante. Curtis confessed that he'd started thinking about losing Portia as suddenly as Dante lost Sam. "I never want to take you or us for granted again," Curtis said.
In the hospital locker room, Lucas was cold with Brad, who told him how sorry he was about Sam. Brad refused to relent and told Lucas he could tell how stressed he was. Lucas finally confessed how he felt. "I can't face the possibility that I might be the reason my sister is dead," Lucas admitted.
Brad assured Lucas that people in the OR with Lucas said the surgery went well. "Why did I let her convince me to do this?" a desperate Lucas asked. Brad told Lucas that Sam's death wasn't his fault, but Lucas kept repeating that he was sure he had done something wrong.
Brad refused to let Lucas beat himself up. "You were the right man for the job. You didn't make a mistake. This is not your fault," Brad said. Lucas noted that Brad was still good at pep talks, so Brad continued. "Sometimes terrible things happen, and it's nobody's fault," Brad added.
A tear-filled Lucas said he did everything he could think of to save Sam, but he failed. Brad put his arms around Lucas as his ex-husband sobbed. That's when Carly walked in and loudly ordered Brad to "back off." Lucas explained that Brad was just trying to be a friend. After Brad left, Carly wanted Lucas to assure her he was not getting back together with Brad. Lucas said he was not, and Brad was just being kind.
Brad left so that Carly and Lucas could talk. Carly assumed that Sam had to have had a heart condition that went undetected and asked Lucas to stop blaming himself for her death.
