Sonny and Laura arrived at the hospital at the same time, unaware of what had happened to Sam. Laura gave Sonny an update on Lulu as they waited for the elevator. They acknowledged that they would forever be grateful to Sam for giving Lulu a fighting chance.

After Rocco and Dante got off the elevator and heard Alexis say her daughter was dead, Rocco argued that Dante had just seen Sam and she was fine. Dante quietly asked Alexis what was going on. Alexis looked at him with quiet desperation in her eyes, as she said, "Sam's gone." Rocco yelled for Alexis to stop saying that.

Dante quieted Rocco and asked Alexis to explain. "What are you talking about? I just saw her. She was joking around. Everything was fine," Dante said in a choked-up voice.

Portia told Dante that Sam experienced cardiac arrest and they did everything they could to save her, but they couldn't. Dante reasoned that the surgery went well and her prognosis looked good. Portia promised to let Dante know the autopsy results before walking away. Rocco then broke down in Dante's arms, still in shock from the news.

When Laura and Sonny got off the elevator, they saw the looks on Rocco and Dante's faces and assumed something had happened to Lulu. "Somebody tell me what happened," Laura cried. Alexis turned around and told her, "It wasn't Lulu. It was Sam. She didn't make it."

Laura and Sonny were stunned the second they heard the news. Dante begged Alexis to tell him what happened. Alexis took Dante's face in her hands and said, "She was showing me her engagement ring." Dante began sobbing as Alexis said the words. "And then she couldn't breathe and then she closed her eyes and then she didn't open them." Dante continued to sob as Alexis embraced him.

Laura told Alexis how sorry she was. "Sam was just an incredible person and so generous," Laura said in tears. Laura asked Rocco to join her in the chapel to say a prayer for Sam. He wanted to stay with his father, but Dante told Rocco to go with his grandmother.

Sonny sat down next to a quiet Alexis and offered help. "Is there anything I can do for you?" Sonny asked. "Bring her back," was all Alexis could manage. Sonny promised to stay with Rocco and Dante while Alexis went to see Kristina and Molly and tell them the truth.

"Thank you for loving my daughter," Alexis told Dante before she left, leading Dante to sob more. Sonny put his arm around Dante and asked his son if there was anything he needed. "I think I need to go see Sam," Dante said.

Dante entered Sam's dark room and saw her cold, lifeless body lying in the bed. Dante could barely look at her before bending down to kiss her on the lips. He then sat beside her with his head buried in her lap as he cried. "I'm so sorry. You look like you're sleeping. Like you're going to wake up. But that's not going to happen. I'm sorry, Sam. You were so beautiful. I don't think you ever realized how beautiful you are. Maybe I should have told you more," Dante said.

Dante thanked Sam for saving his life and creating a family with him. "I just don't know how I'm going to do this without you," Dante cried before kissing Sam's lips again.

After saying goodbye to Sam, Dante sat with Sonny again and told him it didn't feel real. Dante insisted Sam's death was his fault. "Lulu needed a donor and Sam was that donor and she did it for me and Rocco. She did it for us. Now, she's dead," Dante said.

Sonny assured Dante that Sam chose to be Lulu's donor because of who she was inside, and not just for Dante and Rocco. "She knew there was a chance a life could be saved and she was all in," Sonny said.

Laura and Rocco sat in the chapel crying. Rocco felt he needed to say something in order to pray, but Laura assured him it was ok to not say a word. "A prayer can be a wish, a message, a feeling, whatever you have in your heart," she said. Rocco was glad his prayers for his mom had been answered. "But I never wanted Sam to die to make that happen," Rocco said.

Rocco told Laura he thought he was a bad person. "I was always jealous that Danny and Scout had their mom. That she could hug them and talk to them and help them with their homework." Laura told her grandson that his feelings were understandable.

Jason met up with Carly outside Bobbie's after he had asked her to meet him there. When Carly asked what was wrong, Jason bluntly told her that Sam had died as his eyes continued to water. Carly was understandably confused, asking, "What are you talking about?"

Carly was sure it had to be some sort of mistake, but Jason explained he had seen her after she had died. Jason told Carly that Sam had a heart attack, confusing Carly even more as Sam had been perfectly healthy. Jason told Carly he needed her help with Danny and Scout. Danny was set to return to Bobbie's with Scout after trick-or-treating. Jason didn't know how to tell them about their mom.

"How is this happening? How are we standing here trying to figure out how to tell the people Sam loved that she's gone?" Carly asked.

Later, Jason sat on a bench alone as Danny and Scout approached. Scout apologized for not waiting for Jason to trick-or-treat. "Can we visit Mommy now?" Scout asked. Jason sat Scout and Danny down and proceeded to tell them about Sam.

"Something really sad and unexpected happened" Jason started. Danny immediately could tell there was something wrong with his mother. "There's no easy way to say this. But your mom died in the hospital a little while ago."

Scout sat quietly while Danny choked out, "Mom's dead?" Danny knew that was the reason Jason had sent them to Bobbie's. Jason told them that Sam's heart stopped. Danny asked Jason why, but Jason didn't have an answer.

Scout finally spoke. "But Mom can't die. The part they took out was supposed to grow back. She's saving Rocco's mom. She's a hero." Jason assured Scout that Sam was a hero. "Because of your mom, Rocco's mom will live," Jason said, as Scout asked why her mom had to die.

Scout asked to see Sam one last time, but Jason had to tell her no. "It's not Mom anymore," Danny told his sister. Scout insisted that Uncle Jason said that's where Sam was.

"Her body is there. But everything that makes her your mom, her smile, her laugh, her hugs, none of that is at the hospital," Jason said. Scout asked where it all was. "Heaven. In our hearts. Her love is all around us. Just because someone goes to heaven doesn't mean their love stop. Your mom's love will be with you forever," Jason added before embracing the kids.

After Carly left Jason, she headed to the Quartermaines and asked Drew if they could talk in the living room. Drew was alarmed when he heard the tone in Carly's voice. "Sam died this evening," Carly said as Drew absorbed the news. "The surgery went well and she was in recovery and then she had a heart attack," Carly added while in tears.

Carly explained that Jason and Alexis were with Sam. Drew immediately thought of Scout, who was supposed to be trick-or-treating with Jason. Drew sat in the living room in disbelief. "Sam survived so much that would have broken just about anyone else. She was so strong and resilient and fiercely loyal to her friends and her family."

Carly recalled how she and Sam used to clash all the time, but they had become friends and grew to understand one another. Soon, Jason brought Danny and Scout back to the Quartermaines. Scout immediately ran into her father's arms.

Kristina had the maintenance man let her into Sam's penthouse so she could get the place ready for her sister's homecoming. She was shocked and annoyed to see that Molly was also there with the same idea. When Kristina said she was there to support Sam, Molly got a dig in.

"The idea of you taking care of anybody but yourself just seems...well, don't worry, it's already done," Molly said about making the place comfortable for Sam. Kristina showed Molly all the things she had brought for Sam before Molly pointed out that Sam wasn't coming home right away.

Kristina had hoped Sam would be released early, so Molly got in another dig. "Did you read the research I sent you on recovering liver donors?" As usual, Kristina and Molly began bickering as Molly accused Kristina about always performing gestures without follow-through.

Alexis approached Sam's front door and heard Molly and Kristina arguing. She let herself in with her key and stopped her two surviving daughters from tearing each other's hair out. Kristina and Molly took one look at their mother and knew something was very wrong.

Alexis sat her daughters down and told them that Sam was gone. Molly immediately understood but Kristina stood up and insisted Alexis had to be wrong. Molly broke down in tears as Alexis took her into her arms. Molly finally found her words and asked, "How does someone as healthy as Sam have a heart attack?"

Robert was surprised to see Holly arrive at his office. He thought she would have been long gone by now. "We're normally at that stage in things where we're left to clean up the mess you've left," Robert said.

"Nothing I say can justify keeping our daughter from you for all those years," Holly admitted. Holly explained that she was worried about Sasha. It also broke her heart that Sasha was shutting her out. Sasha had even blocked Holly's number. "I had hoped you could speak to her about unlocking me," Holly asked awkwardly.

Robert said that Sasha wasn't answering his calls either so Holly suggested going over to the Quartermaines to see her. Robert thought it was best to leave Sasha be for now. "It's up to her if she wants to let me in, if at all," Robert said.

Robert was still hurt that Holly would never have told him about Sasha if the Cody problem hadn't entered the scenario. Holly admitted that was true. She knew Robert was an amazing dad, which perplexed Robert more. "I want to know why you didn't tell me I had a daughter," Robert demanded.

Holly told Robert that she felt telling Rober the truth years later would have tainted the time they spent together during their first marriage. "I was 100% completely selfish," Holly admitted.

Robert and Holly went over their entire decades-long relationship, with Holly calling Robert the best thing that ever happened to her. "You defined by whole existence," Holly said.

Holly asked Robert if he hated her now. "I could never hate you, but I am not sure if I can forgive you," Robert answered.

Maxie, who was wearing a witch costume, got her house ready for trick-or-treaters while Woody James gave her a hard time. Spinelli appeared dressed as a skeleton just before Georgie emerged without a costume. Georgie declared that she was too old for trick-or-treating.

After claiming she wasn't a kid anymore, Spinelli advised Georgie not to be in so much of a hurry to grow up. Spinelli told the kids about the history of Halloween and how it wasn't just about kids dressing in costumes for no reason. "People dressed up to emulate their heroes," Spinelli said.

Maxie relayed how she stopped dressing up due to peer pressure when she was a kid, but she loves wearing a costume as an adult. Georgie was surprised to hear that her Aunt Georgie, whom she was named for, dressed up all through high school. "I wish I had listened to my sister instead of my friends," Maxie said.

Georgie finally put her costume on. She dressed for Halloween as Xenon, Girl of the 21st Century. As GH fans know, that was the character Kirsten Storms played as a teenager.
