General Hospital Kelly Monaco flashback: Jason and Sam's love story

As Kelly Monaco wraps her 21-year General Hospital run, it's hard to forget the impact the actress and her character, Sam McCall, have had on the soap. Pregnancy brings Jason and Sam together

After con woman Sam McCall found herself under arrest for one of her many misdeeds at the time, she met Jason Morgan, a mob enforcer who's known for spending a lot of time in police custody.

Not long after, Sam entered into an affair with Jason's boss, Sonny Corinthos. The relationship ended when Sonny chose to give it another go with Carly, leaving Sam pregnant and alone. That's when Jason stepped in and claimed to be the father of Sam's child. He moved Sam into his penthouse, and they planned to raise Sam's little girl together.

Sadly, tragedy struck in Sam's ninth month of pregnancy. After an argument with Alexis Davis, who turned out to be Sam's mother, Sam suffered from a placental abruption. Her baby had to be delivered quickly, but she didn't survive. Sam was devastated to learn she'd lost her daughter, but she had Jason there to comfort her.

Jason and Sam fall in love

After the baby died, Sam continued living with Jason, and the pair slowly fell in love. However, Jason's mob lifestyle kept getting in their way — as did third parties. After one brutal argument, Sam ended up sleeping with Alexis' husband, Ric, while Jason resumed his on-again/off-again relationship with Elizabeth Webber.

It took a few years of trying, but Jason and Sam finally married their way. Although Maxie had planned a big, blowout wedding for her friends, Jason and Sam married in the courtyard of their favorite Chinese restaurant wearing jeans, black t-shirts, and leather.

However, their honeymoon was not the magical time they thought it would be. Thanks to crazed serial-killing artist Franco, Jason and Sam's marriage got off to a very rocky start.

Jason and Sam's honeymoon hell

Jason and Sam embarked on their honeymoon, not knowing what was to come. Franco, who was one of Jason's mortal enemies, kidnapped Sam and locked Jason in a room with cameras so he could watch Franco sexually assault Sam. However, Jason never saw everything that happened because the camera cut off too soon.

Poor Sam woke believing she had been raped and was stunned when she later found herself pregnant. All Jason and Sam ever wanted was a child of their own after Sam's first baby died, and now there was a paternity question. When Sam had a DNA test performed, it showed Franco as her child's father. Jason couldn't handle the idea of Sam having another man's baby, which put an emotional wedge between them.

Nine months later, Sam gave birth on her own in a cabin on the side of the road. She was later told that her son had died, sending Sam into a tailspin, thinking she'd lost another child.

Sam is reunited with her son

Eventually, Jason realized that Sam's baby was still alive and raised by Tea Delgado in Llanview. Tea was devastated to learn her baby had died instead of Sam's, but by that time, Heather Webber had kidnapped the little boy. After a confrontation on the hospital roof, Heather tried to jump with the baby in her arms, but Jason rescued him.

Jason and Sam returned home ready to raise baby Danny together, but tragedy struck that same night. Jason was called away on a job for Sonny and was shot. His body was shoved into the water, and Jason was presumed dead. Sam became a single mom and was surprised by some good news. The paternity tests had been switched, and Jason was the father of Sam's child after all.

The tale of two General Hospital Jasons

Sam found a new romance after Jason allegedly died. She first became involved with Silas Clay, but that didn't last long. After she fell for Patrick Drake and they became engaged, Sam was also drawn to a Port Charles amnesiac calling himself Jake Doe. He had plastic surgery after a car accident, and nobody knew who he was. The day Jake was set to marry Elizabeth, Carly discovered that Jake was really Jason, leading Sam and Patrick to split up.

Sam pursued Jason despite him not remembering anything about their life together. Eventually, Jason's memories returned, and he and Sam remarried. Sam even became pregnant again and gave birth to their daughter, Scout. When Scout was a few months old, Sam's life was turned upside down when the real Jason returned, looking like the Jason that Sam always knew.

The man who Sam thought was Jason turned out to be his heretofore unknown twin brother, Drew Cain. Sam and Drew tried giving their marriage a go, but Sam couldn't get Jason off her mind. After Sam and Drew divorced, Sam and Jason tried again, but by then, Sam had changed.

Sam realized she was no longer suited for Jason's mob life. She had two children now and was tired of Jason putting them in danger. Sam broke things off with Jason before finding love again with Dante Falconeri. However, Jason was there to lend Sam support as she was wheeled into the surgery that would change her family's life forever.
