General Hospital planned a spectacular exit story for Chad Duell's Michael Corinthos, complete with special effects to show the horrors of an explosion rocking Sonny's penthouse and Michael being engulfed in flames.
Then, real life came along, reminding the audience what fires can truly do. Los Angeles was ravaged by wildfires this past week, causing multiple soap stars to lose their homes, including Cameron Mathison, who plays a starring role in Michael's story as the uncle who slept with Michael's wife.
GH acknowledged the fires and understood that the shows that were to air could be disturbing and upsetting to some. However, GH still gave us our soapy goodness escape this week as what happened to Michael sent some characters further down a journey of introspection that's been a long time coming.
A sobering reality for Jason and Sonny

It was only fitting that Chad Duell's final scenes as a healthy Michael were with the two men who have been fathers to Michael his entire life. Sonny adopted Michael when he married Carly and raised him as his own, while Jason took care of Michael as his son during the first year of the character's life.
Jason never expected Carly to name him as her baby's father (his real father was Jason's brother AJ), but once she left him with her newborn and skipped town for a while, Jason stepped up. He named him after Sonny (Michael is Sonny's given name) and promised to always take care of him. When 2025's Jason and Sonny heard that explosion and ran into the penthouse, knowing Michael was inside, you knew what these characters had to be feeling. This was their Michael, and they had to save him.
While it was disturbing to see Michael burning alive, what could come next could put Jason, Sonny, and yes, Carly, on a brand-new path they have needed forever. For years, Sonny has known how dangerous his lifestyle was as he watched his children suffer for his actions. Michael's life has been in danger since the moment Carly left him with a mobster's hitman and then married the mobster himself. Sonny and Carly's son, Morgan, was killed by a car bomb. Although that bomb was meant for rival former mobster Julian, it still illustrated the dangers of Sonny and Jason's criminal lifestyle.
The week began with Sonny telling Jason that his heart was a ticking time bomb (while a bomb ticked away in his penthouse), and he wanted to retire and hand his criminal organization to Jason. Surprisingly, Jason turned him down because he had to think about his teenage son Danny and didn't want to be as involved in the mob.
By the end of the week, Jason reminded Sonny that an exit strategy was now more important than ever. In an incredible moment of growth that showed just how far Jason has come since Sam died, Jason announced that he was not going to let his sons end up like Michael. Will Sonny heed his words and realize that every action he has taken for decades has done nothing but put his children in danger?
What will sad Sasha do about her baby?
If you were wondering if Jason might end up claiming Sasha's baby as his own one day, you don't have to wonder too much longer. As soon as Sasha heard about Michael, she rushed to the hospital in tears and shared scenes with Jason, who offered to drive her home. Of course Sasha found herself a substitute baby daddy with her baby daddy's first daddy. Jason must protect Michael's child, right?
Custody chaos caused by Carly
Carly also wants to protect the children, even if the children are not her own. Only Sonny knows that Michael wanted to share custody of Wiley and Amelia with Willow and only asked for sole custody as the first part of a negotiation. With Michael incapacitated, Carly has taken charge, and she wants Michael's children with her and not the woman who cheated on him.
While there is no excuse for Willow taking Wiley to DC to be with Drew and then sleeping with Drew while Michael was on fire, Wiley and Amelia are her children and not Carly's. Willow might want to compare notes with Ava. Carly has been trying to take Avery from her since 2014, when Carly is not related to Avery at all. Years ago, she also tried to keep Spencer for herself and wanted to raise him with Jax when he really belonged to Nikolas. This is what Carly does.
Drew's wakeup call #1
Curtis didn't mince words with Dumb Dumb Drew when he waltzed into the hospital, ready to sit vigil by his nephew's bedside just after bedding his wife in a DC hotel room. "You're the villain here, Drew," Curtis said, breaking the surprising news for his former BFF, who didn't believe him.
Curtis is just about done with Drew, as is the audience at this point, but not as done as Carly.
Drew's wakeup call #2...and Carly's
A year ago, Carly and Drew couldn't take their eyes and hands off each other and were ready to make Nina's life a living hell for ratting them out to the SEC. Drew was right by Carly's side as she mourned her mother, and Carly thought she had found her forever man.
What a difference a year makes. Carly was stunned when Drew dumped her upon learning that Jason was still alive, but she still tried to be his friend. Knowing that Drew slept with her daughter-in-law (and doesn't see a problem with this) has Carly seeing red — and also deservedly shouting in his face.
When Carly accused Drew of caring only about himself, she was right on the money, but Drew didn't see it that way. In his mind, he is the martyr who went to jail to protect Carly. Three cheers to Carly for reminding him that he'd negotiated a slap on the wrist, but the judge decided to send him to Pentonville instead.
But...and we hate to say this due to our...distaste for the character of Drew...three cheers to Drew for proving he can dish it out too. The truth is, Michael would not have been in that hospital bed if Carly hadn't decided to make him an honorary member of the mob from the moment he drew (seriously, no pun intended) his first breath.
Josslyn's truth bombs gave us life
Josslyn let loose on Willow in ways we have only dreamed of. Despite the tragedy of the week in reel life and real life, we couldn't stop laughing when Josslyn called the pure and perfect former third-grade teacher a skank. Considering that she had sex on the playroom floor with her husband's uncle on the night said uncle's ex-wife died can be considered skanky. She also had sex with her first husband's best friend during a child's birthday party while she mourned her own baby who had died. That's our Willow.
Once a cheater, always a cheater, right Willow? Josslyn certainly thinks so. She reminded Willow that she cheated on Chase with Michael so Michael should have known she would cheat on him. She also had Willow's hero-worship fetish all figured out. Chase saved her from Shiloh so she was suddenly in love. Michael saved her rights to Wiley. Love. Drew allegedly saved her bone marrow donor (he didn't). So, yep, Willow's in love again. We could have listened to Josslyn rant all day when usually we never want to listen to Josslyn rant.
Protecting God's children?
As we suspected, Cyrus thinks he is doing God's work by killing people. When he walked into Michael's room, told him he would no longer suffer in pain, and put his hand on his forehead before injecting him with a potentially lethal dose of Digitalis, we knew why he killed Sam and that he was the one who tampered with Lulu's ventilator.
Cyrus thought he was putting Lulu out of her pain, was angry at Sam for giving Lulu life, and killed Dex to protect himself. In the end, Cyrus sees himself as a mercy killer and finds nothing wrong with what he is doing. Now that we have that cleared up, we can't imagine that GH set Michael on fire just so that Cyrus could then kill him with heart medication. Something tells us Michael will survive Cyrus' attempt on his life. So, onto the next thing that EVERYONE knew — and we mean EVERYONE!
It's a bouncing baby violinist for Brook Lynn
Who didn't let out a loud "Ho-hum" the second Brook Lynn mentioned her first pregnancy — in the middle of a Wednesday episode, no less? GH must have thought everyone already knew to present it without any dramatic, soapy fanfare.
So, yes, Brook Lynn got pregnant when she was a camp counselor and gave the baby up with Lois' help. Yawn. It's pretty clear Gio is the child she gave away, but we are still not sure if Dante or Cody is the proud papa. At least there is some suspense in this story, but not much...
Till next week. Hopefully, GH won't be planning another funeral.
