Emmy-nominated Guiding Light star, Robert Newman, is headed back to stage -- again. Several months after the actor took a break from GL his stage roots. The actor will appear on stage at Michigan's Barn Theatre in the musical Shenandoah. Newman previously appeared in several of the theater's productions.
Guiding Light star Robert Newman (Josh Lewis) will guest star in the Off-Broadway musical Glimpses of the Moon in the Oak Room of the Algonquin Hotel in New York City. Earlier this year the Emmy-nominated actor took time off from Guiding Light to appear in the musical Shenandoah.
A sparkling romantic musical, Glimpses of the Moon is based on one of Edith Wharton's rare comedies. Set in 1922, an age of anything but innocence, Glimpses of the Moon follows the jazzy whirl of Manhattan society. With plenty of friends, but little money, Susy Branch and her friend Nick Lansing devise a clever scheme to live beyond their means. They'll marry and live off the wedding gifts, while they help one another trade up to suitable millionaires. The plan works perfectly until they fall in love.
The production features an all-star cast of Broadway alum, including Autumn Hurlbert (Legally Blonde) as Susy, Chris Peluso (Mamma Miat) as Nick, Jane Blass (Hairspray Nat'l Tour) as Ellie, Laura Jordan (Cry Baby) as Coral, Daren Kelly (South Pacific) as Nelson, and Glenn Peters as Streffy. The understudies are Russell Arden Koplin (Les Miserables) and Matt Lutz.
Newman has worked extensively in the theater world, playing leading roles in the musicals The Robber Bridegroom, Guys and Dolls, Bye Bye Birdie, and The Fantasticks, as well as roles in such diverse plays as Veronica's Room, Titus Andronicus, The Owl and the Pussycat, Medea and The Rainmaker. He was seen off-Broadway at the Orpheum Theater in Quiet on the Set and in Betty the Yeti at Stamford Theatreworks in Stamford, CT. In addition, Newman and his wife, actress Britt Newman, (ex-Lily Slater, Loving,) have performed opposite each other in a number of plays, including Picnic, Barefoot in the Park, Romantic Comedy, Sylvia, (which Robert also directed), and The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams.
Hailed by critics and audiences in January 2008, Glimpses of the Moon is the first original musical created specifically for the intimate wood-paneled Oak Room of the Algonquin Hotel.
Newman appears on November 24th and December 1st. The Algonquin Hotel is located at 59 West 44th Street, between Fifth and Sixth Avenues.
