Guiding Light has announced that it will donate its wardrobe to a New York-based charity that helps women get dressed for success when going to look for jobs. It is estimated that hundreds of women could benefit from the clothing being donated after GL concludes its run in September.
Guiding Light will continue its mission of giving back even after it fades from the airwaves in September. The longest-running scripted program in the history of television will donate its wardrobe to Bottomless Closet, a New York City charity that helps economically disadvantaged women find clothing for job interviews.
"Since we film in New York City, it seemed fitting to donate the clothes to Bottomless Closet and help women in our community to improve their lives," said Shawn Reeves, Guiding Light's costume designer. "High unemployment rates make it more crucial than ever for women to have the right outfits for job interviews and to remain competitive in the workplace."
The clothing donated by Guiding Light will become part of Bottomless Closet's "boutique" that it has set up at its headquarters in the Hotel Pennsylvania. Women who are referred to Bottomless Closet receive two complete outfits prior to going on a scheduled job interview and can return for three more outfits once they find employment. Over 1,600 New York City women will be outfitted in the Bottomless Closet boutique this year.
"We greatly appreciate Guiding Light's generous donation, which will support our efforts to provide women with business attire so they can interview with confidence and enhance their self esteem," said Kendall Farrell, Bottomless Closet's Executive Director. "Our clients will have interview outfits literally fit for a leading lady."
Donations to Bottomless Closet are not just limited to television shows. Anyone interested in donating lightly worn clothing can drop off their donations at Bottomless Closet's office, 15 Penn Plaza, B-Level, Suite 40, Monday through Thursday. For more information, please call 212-563-2499.
