GH's Kelly Thiebaud talks Emmys, thanks writers and Steve Burton for her nomination

Find out what Kelly Thiebaud included on her reel to snag an Emmy nomination for her work as General Hospital's Britt Westbourne, plus get the scoop on how she feels about "the Britch" growing up.

A lot of General Hospital fans will be rooting for Kelly Thiebaud (Britt Westbourne) during this Friday's Daytime Emmy Awards, where she'll be competing in the Outstanding Supporting Actress category in what is her very first Emmy nomination in her ten-year soap career.

Thiebaud had plenty of great storyline moments in 2021, and she ended up including quite a smattering of powerful scenes on her reel.

"I had quite a few scenes to pull from last year. I have my breakup scene with Jason [Steve Burton] [and] where Britt tells Carly [Laura Wright] that Jason is gone," she tells TV Insider. "There was a Britt/Jason scene where they were on the run right after Sam [Kelly Monaco] tried to bring passports for them to run [away]. Jason tells Britt he's going to drop her at one of Sonny's [Maurice Benard] islands."

That last one, as the actress explains, went on the reel because she thought the writing was good.

"The conversation between us was real and authentic and a nice balance with the emotional stuff I have on the reel," she shares. "Steve was the best partner. I honestly have to thank him for this nomination. I was given great writing working with him."

In addition to the above scenes, Thiebaud shares that she also added "the aftermath of the cave where Jason dies -- Britt stands up and says, 'No, we're going down there to find him,'" as well as the scenes in which Britt found out that she has the genetic markers for Huntington's disease.

Just from Thiebaud's reel alone, it's easy to see that 2021 was quite the journey for Britt. But so has the actress' entire run on the ABC soap opera, which began with Britt being quite the troublemaker and has evolved to see the character mature in many ways.

"It's been night and day," the actress says. "However, I don't want to lose who she was. She's finding a kinder, gentler version of herself. She's learning how to manage emotions and people. But she's still a loose cannon. She'll still be different from everyone else. Her reactions are not traditional. I want to keep that flavor."

She adds that she has the fans to thank for Britt's evolving personality and lasting presence on the show.

"As much as they hated her, there was something enjoyable about watching her fall on her face!" she says with a laugh. "I think the redemption is paying off. She's come through that to this lighter version. It's been fun for me to play. She has so many different elements. I love the dark and light sides of her."
