Freeform's Cruel Summer is back for a second season with General Hospital actor Sean Blakemore (ex-Shawn Butler) set to take part in a Y2K mystery.
The teenage mystery series Cruel Summer has been picked up for a second season, and General Hospital fans will be thrilled to know that Sean Blakemore (ex-Shawn Butler) has joined the cast of the Freeform drama.
According to the network, season two of Cruel Summer will chronicle the rise and fall of an intense teenage friendship. "Approaching the story from three different timelines surrounding Y2K, the season twists and turns as it tracks the early friendship between Megan (Sadie Stanley), Isabella (Eloise Payet), and Megan's best friend, Luke (Griffin Gluck), the love triangle that blossomed, and the mystery that would impact all of their lives going forward."
There aren't any details about Blakemore's role at this time, but the release does tease what to expect from the three core characters. For starters, Megan is a computer coder and honor student from a blue-collar family, whose "dreams are dashed when events take a tragic turn."

Meanwhile, Isabella is an "alluring and enigmatic" exchange student who is spending a year with the Landry family. While there, she "shakes up life in this small town, but her charm can't hide the truth about her past or the real reason she came to live with the Landrys forever."
Finally, Luke Chambers is Megan's lifelong best friend who "finds himself at a crossroads as he tries to establish his own place in the world, separate from the expectations of his powerful father."
The first season of Cruel Summer premiered last year and quickly became the most-watched series in Freeform's history. Starring Olivia Holt, Chiara Aurelia, Michael Landes, Froy Gutierrez, Harley Quinn Smith, Allius Barnes, Blake Lee, and Brooklyn Sudano, the show followed the mysterious disappearance of popular Texas high school student Kate Wallis (Holt) as outsider Jeanette Turner (Aurelia) assumed the role in her absence. The story unfolded between 1993, 1994, and 1995, following the aftermath of Kate's return after her abduction.
Sean Blakemore joined the cast of GH in 2011 in a recurring capacity but was upped to contract status not long after. In 2015, he exited the ABC soap opera in an unexpected storyline that had Shawn sent to prison for a crime that he did not commit -- a mistake that was only cleared up last year! The actor left GH again in February of this year, citing "other obligations" as the reason he was stepping away.
Some of his other credits include Devious Maids, Dangerous Curves, Close Up, and Ad Astra.
