General Hospital asks fans to join Sofia Mattsson (Sasha Gilmore), Cynthia Watros (Nina Reeves), Kathleen Gati (Dr. Liesl Obrecht), Brook Kerr (Dr. Portia Robinson), and Johnny Wactor (Brando Corbin) in honoring the GLSEN Day of Silence, a student-led demonstration against harassment and discrimination of LGBTQ+ people in schools.
General Hospital is taking part in this Friday's GLSEN Day of Silence, a national student-led demonstration where LGBTQ+ students and allies take a vow of silence to protest the harmful effects of harassment and discrimination of LGBTQ+ students in schools.
The ABC soap opera announced their support of the action with a social media post and a video that shows Sofia Mattsson (Sasha Gilmore), Cynthia Watros (Nina Reeves), Kathleen Gati (Dr. Liesl Obrecht), Brook Kerr (Dr. Portia Robinson), and Johnny Wactor (Brando Corbin) staying silent in front of the camera.
Started by two college students in the mid-90s, the GLSEN Day of Silence has expanded to reach hundreds of thousands of students each year. Every April, students go through the school day without speaking, ending the day with "Breaking the Silence" rallies and events to share their experiences during the protest and bring attention to ways their schools and communities can become more inclusive.
This year's Day of Silence will be taking place on Friday, April 23rd, and General Hospital is showing their support of LGBTQ+ students by asking viewers to join Mattsson, Watros, Gati, Kerr, and Wactor by making their own silent videos and sharing them on social media.
"Nearly 9 in 10 #LGBTQ+ students experience verbal harassment in school," the show tweeted. "On 04/23, students will participate in @GLSEN's #DayofSilence to show their support for LGBTQ+ students and their right to safety at school. This silent video supports their action -- join us & make your own."
