Donna Mills prepared for a General Hospital landing

Primetime soap icon Donna Mills is returning to her daytime roots. The actress has been tapped for a top-secret role on General Hospital.

Port Charles is about to get tied up in knots -- Knot's Landing, that is. Primetime soap vixen Donna Mills will be joining the cast of General Hospital later this winter.

Entertainment Weekly broke the news of Mills's hiring, but ABC is keeping incredibly mum about who the actress will play.

"Mills was the only choice to play a new (see: big) character," EW reported, noting that GH's writers are huge fans of Mills's Knot's Landing work.

Donna Mills is best known as Knot's Landing's Abby Ewing, a role she played from 1980 through 1989, and again for the series finale in 1993 -- but the actress got her start in daytime. She was part of the original cast of the series Love Is A Many Splendored Thing in 1967, and Mills remained with the show through 1970. Mills also appeared on The Secret Storm.

In 2009, the TV Land Awards honored Knot's Landing with its Anniversary Award. Mills earned three Soap Opera Digest Awards as Outstanding Primetime Villainess in the 1980s.

UPDATE: On February 25, Mills informed her Twitter followers of her first airdate."Let the countdown begin! My first apperance on @GeneralHospital is fast approching! Tune in March 14 at 2pm," Mills announced.
