The ''Reimagined'' colorway of the Air Jordan 5 is hitting the Nike store and other select retail stores soon. The re-release of one of the popular silhouettes of the Jumpman label has caused sneakerheads to take a trip down history and revisit the OG sneakers, the first-ever AJ5.
The upcoming AJ5 "Reimagined" iteration is dressed in a Black Metallic colorway and will be available on February 8, 2025. The sneakers maintain the original design of the Air Jordan 5 silhouette with just a few changes to set them apart.
Let's go back and meet the original silhouette.
Air Jordan 5 debut, history, and other details
The Air Jordan 5 was released in 1990, generally acknowledged as one of Michael Jordan's best years. It was the year that he expressed so much ferocity on court—scoring 69 points against Cleveland and making 92 three-pointers in one season alone.
American designer Tinker Hatfield decided to capture MJ's ferocity and incorporate it into a shoe. He likened Michael Jordan's performance that year to a fighter jet called the Supermarine Spitfire MK VIII, which he based his design on. In February 1990, the AJ5 was brought to life, and Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon character introduced it to the world.
The Swoosh label describes the first-ever Air Jordan 5 as follows:
"At the end of his 1989-1990 season, it was clear Jordan was better than ever. Outdoing his own previous best records, he tallied 69 points against Cleveland and hit 92 three-pointers, compared to only 68 in all his prior seasons combined. It appeared he was just getting warmed up."
It continues:
"The shoe captured a ferocity truly reminiscent of its relentless muse who was fighting his way to the top of his game."
The debut sneakers were released in four colorways: Black Metallic Silver, White/ Red-Black "Fire Red," White/ Red-Black "Black Tongue," and White/ Grape Ice—New Emerald "Grapes," which Michael didn't wear to an official game.
The AJ5 also had an exclusive unreleased version that only the NBA star himself wore. It included an embroidered 23 on the sides and came in a White/Black—fire Red colorway.
The AJ5 featured a reflective tongue, protruding silhouette, translucent rubber soles, a lace lock, and a shark tooth design on the midsole—a nod to Jordan's bite that season. It sold for $125 at retail.
Nike sneaker aficionados who are interested in the AJ5 can consider the Air Jordan 5 Reimagined sneakers. They will be released on February 8, 2025, with a selling price of $210, and are also available in family sizes.
