Kanye West has fired another round at controversy with his usual flair for being polarizing. Recent revelations by DJ Akademiks suggest that the rapper wore a black outfit accessorized with a Swastika chain during an interview. This new information comes after a series of things that have put this artist under the microscope.
In 2023, Kanye West made headlines when he appeared at his Vultures Rave album listening party in Miami wearing a pointed black hood, reminiscent of the attire historically associated with the Ku Klux Klan (KKK).
The Ku Klux Klan (KKK) is a racist hate group in the United States. The group has a history of violence and discrimination, and it follows extreme religious and political beliefs.
The Ku Klux Klan outfit can be traced back to the 1920s. It is displayed in the International Slavery Museum to help people understand the truth about racism in the United States. The fact that this outfit came from New York shows that the Ku Klux Klan was active across the whole country, not just in the southern states.
Kanye West sparks controversy with Swastika symbolism and offensive posts
There have been reports for some time that Kanye West has an attraction towards the symbol of the Swastika. A report by The New York Times in October 2023 found very troubling information about admiration for Adolph Hitler that West professes to have. According to the report, he allegedly pressured a Jewish Adidas executive to "kiss a portrait of Hitler every day" and frequently referenced Nazi propaganda strategies.
Amid these controversies, Kanye West recently announced the return of his Sunday Service choir events. Initiated in 2019 alongside his gospel album Jesus Is King, the Sunday Service performances have been known for their spiritual themes and gospel renditions.
The announcement, made via Instagram on March 16, 2025, included a screenshot of a conversation with Sunday Service choir director Jason White. However, any act of a positive reception was quickly overshadowed when West subsequently posted an image of a Ku Klux Klan robe with the caption “Outfit of the day". The post, also shared on X, was later removed but had already sparked intense criticism.
Adding to the ongoing controversy, West recently faced backlash for selling a white t-shirt featuring a large swastika emblem. The item, labeled “HH-01” on his website, has been speculated to reference the Nazi slogan "Heil Hitler."
The online retailer Shopify eventually removed the website, citing concerns over potential fraud. Shopify called out and condemned the merchandise outright without speculating whose fault this was.
Fans have reacted to West's swastika obssesion:
"Ye done made the swastika cool," an X user reacted.
"What’s his obsession with that?" another user commented.
"I miss the old Kanye," another X user wrote.
The Chicago rapper was seen wearing a swastika t-shirt shortly after ranting about the symbol on X:
"N***AS RAP ABOUT HOW MANY PEOPLE THEY KILLED BUT THEY SCARED TO WEAR A SWASTIKA T SHIRT CAUSE THEY LABELS AND MANAGERS AND STREAMING SERVICES AND TOURING COMPANIES MOB UP TO STOP N***AS MONEY. NOBODY BETTER NEVER SAY S**T TO ME ABOUT MY T SHIRT. WHITE PEOPLE WHO ARE AGAINST THE SWASTIKA DON'T WANT TO HAVE A CONVO ABOUT BLACK ABORTION." he wrote.
Kanye West’s actions continue to provoke widespread condemnation, with many questioning the motivations behind his repeated use of hate symbols. He hasn't responded clearly or directly to concerns lately.
