On March 13, 2025, the fashion world made major headlines after Donatella Versace stepped down as the creative director of the luxury fashion house Versace. Donatella has been a part of Versace for almost thirty years as she took over the label in 1997.

Donatella Versace’s position as creative director has now been taken over by Dario Vitale. The new creative director joins Versace with his previous experience from another renowned label, Miu Miu.

Donatella Versace shared an Instagram post to welcome Dario Vitale for his new role and also thanked her design team and other employees of the fashion label.

"Championing the next generation of designers has always been important to me. I am thrilled that Dario Vitale will be joining us, and excited to see Versace through new eyes. I want to thank my incredible design team and all the employees at Versace that I have had the privilege of working with for over three decades.”

She went to talk about her brother and founder of the fashion label, Gianni Versace.

“It has been the greatest honor of my life to carry on my brother Gianni's legacy. He was the true genius, but I hope I have some of his spirit and tenacity,” Donatella continued.

Donatella Versace also unveiled her new role in the fashion house. She stated that she would now handle new responsibilities as Chief Brand Ambassador in the company.

“In my new role as Chief Brand Ambassador, I will remain Versace's most passionate supporter. Versace is in my DNA and always in my heart." Donatella added.

Capri Holdings announced Donatella Versace’s new role in a press release

The parent company of Versace, Capri Holdings, in a press release revealed Donatella’s role of Chief Brand Ambassador. It highlighted that Donatella will take charge of her new role from April 1, 2025 onwards. Talking about the responsibilities in her new role, the press stated that Donatella will be overseeing Versace’s philanthropic and charitable efforts.

The fashion house’s CEO, Emmanuel Gintzburger, also underlined contributions and dedication of Donatella Versace in the company.

“Versace is what it is today because of Donatella Versace and the passion she has brought to her role every day for nearly thirty years. The universal values she stands for and her love for uncompromised creativity anchored Versace far beyond a brand or a company. Working alongside her has been an incredible privilege and pleasure. I am confident in the company and where it stands today, as we are well-prepared for the organization to write this new chapter for the house.,” CEO said.

After Gianni Versace's assassination outside his Miami Beach estate in July 1997, Donatella Versace took on the family empire without professional design or management expertise.

Her creative vision and distinctive personal style have helped preserve the fashion house’s legacy, which includes famous red carpet events and pop cultural references. Donatella outfitted Madonna, Beyoncé, Britney Spears, and Lady Gaga.

Donatella designed JLo’s 2000 green jungle dress and former First Lady, Michelle Obama's 2016 final state dinner dress.
