Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds will not be attending the 2025 Met Gala, a source exclusively confirmed to Us Weekly. The couple, who have been regular attendees at the prestigious fashion event, have opted out this year amid their ongoing legal battle with actor and director Justin Baldoni.
Lively and Reynolds have been at the Met Gala together many times. They debuted as a couple at the Met Gala in 2014. They showed up again in 2017, but then in 2018, Lively only made an appearance as an individual, and still, she has been a standout beauty on the red carpet. Despite their history with the gala, their absence this year does not come as a surprise given their current legal entanglements.
Blake Lively’s Met Gala looks
Blake Lively has worn many stunning outfits at the Met Gala over the years.
In 2011, she looked elegant in a Grecian-style dress.
In 2014, she wore a stunning, super-flattering Gucci dress that she completely swept up with that fabulous Old Hollywood glamour.
In 2016, a dress of hers from Burberry looked like a princess at a party, but it didn't fit with that fancy tech theme.
She wore a gold gown from Versace in 2017.
At the 2018 Met Gala, Blake Lively appeared in a silk velvet gown with a crystal-encrusted bustier.
In 2022, she amazed everyone by wearing a gown that transformed from copper to green, inspired by the Statue of Liberty.
Legal Battle with Justin Baldoni
The couple's decision to forgo the 2025 event follows an ongoing legal dispute involving Blake Lively and Baldoni, her co-star in It Ends With Us, which premiered in 2024. In December of that year, Blake Lively filed a lawsuit against Baldoni, accusing him of s*xual harassment on set and orchestrating a smear campaign against her. Baldoni has denied these allegations.
In response, Baldoni filed a $400 million countersuit in January 2025 against Lively, Reynolds, and Lively’s publicist, alleging defamation. While Reynolds and Lively have already denied those accusations, they recently moved to knock the whole lawsuit out of court.
“The painful reality is that Ms. Lively is not alone in being sued for defamation after speaking up about being sexually harassed at work. That is entirely why California recently enacted AB 933, the Privileged Communications Incident of Sexual Assault, Harassment, or Discrimination Act, which codified California civil code section 47.1." Lively’s spokesperson said in a statement to Us.
While Ms. Lively has suffered greatly by speaking up and pursuing legal claims, it is important for other people to know that they have protections, and that there is a specific law that expressly protects them from being silenced or financially ruined by a defamation lawsuit because they had the courage to speak up.”
Baldoni’s lawyer, Bryan Freedman, responded to Lively’s request to dismiss the case with a statement to Us magazine.
Freedman stated,
“Ms. Lively’s recent motion to dismiss herself from the self-concocted disaster she initiated is one of the most abhorrent examples of abusing our legal system. Stringent rules are put into place to protect the innocent and allow individuals to rightfully defend themselves. Laws are not meant to be twisted and curated by privileged elites to fit their own personal agenda."
He continued,
"As we said yesterday in response to Mr. Reynolds’ same cowardly measures, we will continue to hold Ms. Lively accountable for her actions of pure malice which include falsely accusing my clients of harassment and retaliation. Her fantastical claims will be swiftly debunked as discovery moves forward, easily disproved with actual, evidentiary proof.”
While fans may be disappointed by Blake Lively and Reynolds' absence, their decision to step back from this year’s event reflects the ongoing legal complexities they are navigating. Whether they're coming back to future Met Galas is still a big mystery, but their historical influence is clear and undeniable.
