Michael Urie hosted the 36th GLAAD Media Awards held on March 27, 2025, in style. The Ugly Betty actor, known for his gender-bending outfits and daring sartorial choices, wore a pink and green outfit from Christian Siriano.
The outfit was inspired by Urie’s 2019 Met Gala look and the pink and green color theme of the Wicked movie. The actor’s Met Gala look was a strapless pink gown on one side and a striped tux and pants on the other.
Michael Urie’s GLAAD Media Awards outfit was a sparkly pink and green two-piece in a half-and-half design, a nod to the Wicked Characters Glinda and Elphaba. Urie also revealed that his outfit paid homage to Cynthia Erivo, who stars as Elphaba in Wicked. Erivo took home the GLAAD Stephen F. Kolzak Award for shining light on issues pertaining to LGBTQIA+ individuals.
Michael Urie’s outfit featured a multicolored design with a full jacket on top and a pants and skirt combo from the waist down. Christian Siriano explained the creative process behind Urie’s outfit to WWD. The idea was to pay homage to the characters in Wicked. He added that the outfit also incorporated some of the best Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo red carpet moments:
"It was even fun to play around with the idea of all the great red carpet moments that Ariana [Grande] and Cynthia had and to give a nod to that as well with this look,”
“It’s an homage and somewhat of a sequel,” Michael Urie describes his GLAAD Media Awards 2025 outfit
The actor/producer/director, whilst interviewing with WWD, described his eye-catching GLAAD Awards 2025 outfit as a sequel to his 2019 Met Gala costume. He added that his feminine-masculine outfit for the Met Gala in 2019 was the precursor to his stylish GLAAD costume:
“I wouldn’t have thought of an Elphaba/Glinda suit if he hadn’t created the original femme/masc suit. It’s an homage and somewhat of a sequel,”
Siriano stated that clothes should be a form of expression and fashion shouldn’t adhere to any rules as you should be free to wear what you want and be whomever you want to be:
"Clothes should be a fun form of expression, and there are no rules, and there never should be. Wear what you want to wear and be who you want to be. Fashion should only help that,”
According to Michael Urie, fashion is a significant part of the LGBTQIA+ community, and he celebrated it at the award night with his outfit.
