Michael Kors officially launched his first luxury store on Amazon on March 18. The 65-year-old designer started the brand in 1981, at the age of 22. The fashion designer celebrated the event by hosting a party at Aman New York. Suki Waterhouse also joined the celebration party along with the designer and other celebrities.
The brand also uploaded a post featuring Delilah Belle Hamlin, Kate Bartlett, and Olivia Ponton, who appeared with the Michael Kors Laila bag for the launch event of their Amazon store.
While Michael Kors started his journey at the age of 22, the fashion designer always had the zeal to design, starting at the age of five.
Michael Kors designed his mother's wedding dress at the age of five
Michael Kors was previously named Karl Anderson Jr. When he was five, his mother married Bill Kors; hence his name change. At that time, he was allowed to choose his first name and decided on Michael David Kors.
At the time of her mother's second marriage to Bill Kors, Michael designed his mother's wedding dress. Kors started using his creativity in designing clothes in his teenage years. He also gave the basement, where he used to design clothes, the name of Iron Butterfly.
He decided to join the Fashion Institute of Technology for further studies at the age of eighteen. However, he dropped out even before completing a year and joined as a salesperson at Lothar's in Midtown Manhattan.
The designer started his own company in 1981, naming it Michael Kors. After the success of his women's line, he decided to expand by launching KORS Michael Kors in 1990 through a licensing deal. However, in 1993, the licensing partner shut down, forcing him to put the KORS line on hold.
After four years, in 1997, Michael Kors made a comeback by launching an affordable clothing line. Soon after, he also introduced his menswear line. The designer also worked at Celine from 1997 to 2003 as a designer.
Since then, Kors has released a range of clothes and accessories that have been worn by celebrities including Blake Lively, Taylor Swift, Emily Blunt, and Heidi Klum.
The brand also shared its dedication to giving back to the world by adding,
"To date, Michael Kors has helped WFP deliver over 17 million meals to hungry children. In 2015 the designer was named Global Ambassador Against Hunger for the United Nations World Food Programme."
Michael Kors has won the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award, the Couture Council Award for Artistry of Fashion, and was named to Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People list in 2013.
