Cleaning sneakers can be quite easy, but cleaning suede sneakers is always a hassle for many. Suede sneakers are more delicate than normal sneakers and are prone to absorbing dirt and stains along with getting damaged by excessive water because of the porous texture. Since it is made of a soft texture, cleaning improperly can also change the color of the sneakers.
We have listed down the best ways to clean suede sneakers so you don't face the same problem. These tips and tricks are easy and practical and work like magic to keep your suede sneakers brand new for a long time.
Clean the suede sneakers in under twenty minutes
The whole process of cleaning the suede sneakers can be broken down into four easy steps:
Step 1: Preserve the shape of the sneakers
If you have a shoe tree, put it inside the shoes to help them preserve their shape. The key is to help the shoe retain its shape before the cleaning process by completely drying it.
If you don't have a shoe tree, stuff the shoes with newspaper and keep them under the fan or where sunlight can reach them. Change the newspaper from time to time so it doesn't leave its stain. You can also use silica gel pads or a soft towel to pat dry if the moisture isn't evaporating on its own. Don't throw the sneakers in the dryer, as it can damage them further.
Step 2: Brush out the dry dirt
Once your suede sneakers are dry, use a soft shoe brush and gently brush it in one direction to remove the dry dirt. Don't put extra pressure on it, as it will damage the suede material.
If you don't have a shoe brush, you can use a soft-bristle toothbrush, clean cloth, or soft microfiber towel that is not harsh for the shoes. For any stuck gum, keep the shoes in the fridge in a bag, and the gum will harden on its own, making it easy to remove.
Step 3: Suede rubber to the rescue
For the remaining dirt and debris, use a suede rubber or normal pencil eraser to remove the leftover dirt. Make sure to use a fresh piece of rubber or eraser so it doesn't leave any stains.
Start with moving them in a back-and-forth direction until the dirt comes out. Leave the remaining dirt and stains for the next step.
Step 4: Treat the stains
Take any microfiber cloth, dip it lightly in suede cleaner, and gently rub it on the suede stains. If you don't have a suede cleaner, you can use rubbing alcohol or white vinegar, which works the same way.
They are great at removing stains and evaporating on their own without leaving any marks or damaging the suede. If you are left out with the grease, dust a little corn flour and gently wipe it using a microfiber towel after a few hours.
Suede sneakers are not like regular sneakers and shouldn't be washed directly with water. Instead, try to use minimal water and more solutions to retain its material for the long term. One can also apply a layer of suede spray that will protect the suede from getting any stains and dirt.
