Zayn Malik has announced his first solo tour, 'Stairway to the Sky,' to start this autumn. The former One Direction band member announced the new tour with a brief appearance on Jimmy Falon's The Tonight Show, followed by a social media announcement.
The appearance on The Tonight Show started with Jimmy Fallon stating:
"This is gonna be one of our best show."
Followed by Zayn Malik appearing on the show with a coffee for Jimmy Fallon and a memo that read:
"I am going on my first ever solo tour this Autumn."
Once Zayn walked away from the stage, Jimmy Fallon read aloud the memo and then showcased the official poster of the tour, which shows Zayn Malik sitting beside a group of radios with antennas and the words 'Stairway to the Sky Tour':
Zayn Malik's tour announcement comes on the heels of his fourth studio album
Zayn Malik's tour announcement came just four months after the release of his fourth studio album, Room Under the Stairs. At the time of this article's writing, not much was known about the tour.
The album was released on May 17, 2024, and has been fairly successful, charting at number 15 on the Billboard 200 album chart and number 3 on the UK album chart.
The singer elaborated on the songwriting process behind the new album in an appearance on the Zach Sang Show podcast on May 9, 2024, stating:
"Yeah, I got um somelike uh guitar riffs and stuff like samples and just played them over a Drum…Real Simple like production and then I wrote like the The Melodies to to the music for that song so it it depends each processes is different sometimes I could have something like pre-written for example I like to write a lot of rap"
The singer continued:
"so um I'll take like bits from like certain raps that I've written and then I'll take that and be like oh that would be a really good verse you know like I'll use that one line there as a verse and then develop a whole idea from just one line in a rap oh that's really cool yeah or then sometimes I could have like…"
The singer further elaborated:
"A little bit of an instrument playing like I said like a drum or a bit of a guitar riff or whatever just something real simple that has a lot of space for me to f*ck about with um and then I can slot in that way too so either way."
In another interview with Nylon on May 14, 2024, the singer elaborated on the inspiration behind his new country music sound, stating:
"I was pretty much on my farm having a glass of whiskey and listening to a bit of Stapleton by the fire with my dog, playing guitar. I’m proud of it. I think it shows a certain level of intellect, to be a bit ahead of the curve. People need to know I didn’t jump on the bandwagon."
Zayn Malik's solo career is best known for his debut album, Mind of Mine, which was released just after One Direction disbanded on March 25, 2015. The album remains the most successful of his solo career to date, with platinum certifications in Italy, Canada, and the US.
