The recently released horror movie, Wolf Man, by Leigh Whannell has left an impact as well as intrigue amongst the audience about its ending. Here is an analysis of what happens at the end of Wolf Man, especially to the protagonist Blake.

Wolf Man follows the plot of Blake, who along with his wife Charlotte and their daughter Ginger arrive at Blake's ancestral residence in Oregon following the demise of his father, all while grappling with the grief due to a complex relationship he has had with his violent father, along with his marriage going through a rough time. However, the family is chased by a mysterious, ferocious creature who is not categorically a 'wolf' per se but is far from being anything human-like.

Whilst in a confrontation with the creature to protect his family, Blake ends up getting infected with some ailment due to a scratch inflicted by the creature, which causes him to shed off his 'human' qualities, and gradually mutate into the monstrous creature. Eventually, he dies at the end.

The ending of Wolf Man concludes with the death of Blake. What is interesting to observe is that, even though Blake is in an extremely vulnerable state of intense pain, suffering, and transformation, he does not let his monster body consume his human self and sensibilities completely. He embraces his death to protect his family as he is shot by a gun by Charlotte, as he implores her to end his life as the deadly monster would have soon fully engulfed Blake and would have caused detrimental harm to his family. In other words, he chooses humanity and love of his human side over giving in committing an atrocity as the creature provokes.

One of the biggest revelations towards the end of Wolf Man is about the identity of the creature, as it is revealed to be Blake's father. Blake has had memories from his early childhood days when his father was on a mission to chase down the monster, but he ended up getting contaminated by the creature, and he became the very thing he was trying to pull down. The realization about the creature's identity occurs to Blake when he notices a tattoo on the creature's arm like his father had, just after moments Blake kills the creature. Blake gets hit hard by that realization of killing his father, and therefore as the story follows, it ends with the death of Blake.

It is indeed a very sorrowful ending, but also feels heartwarming at the same time to witness the sensitivity of Blake even at such testing times. Another reading of the death of Blake could also possibly be a symbolic representation of Blake destroying the cycle of intergenerational trauma, as he had between him and his father. Charlotte and Ginger do stay alive by the end of the story, as we see a glimmer of a hopeful future for the duo as they are slowly healing, rebuilding, and restoring their life after the traumatic event. The ending of Wolfman is a complete one, as it shows no hint of any possible sequel or a cliffhanger.
