Wicked Part 2 is soon to hit screens after the release of the film's first part. The first part of Wicked was released in 2024 as an American musical fantasy film. The film was directed by Jon M. Chu. Amongst the other creators are Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox who wrote the film. The first part of the film premiered on November 3, 2024, at the State Theatre in Sydney, Australia, and was released in the United States on November 22.
The second installment of Jon M. Chu's two-part adaptation of the books will be released on 21 November 2025, about a year after the first. Wicked Part 2 will be the second installment in the story of the Witches of Oz, with Ariana Grande playing Galinda, the Good Witch. Cynthia Erivo will play the character of Elphaba also known as the Wicked Witch who belonged to the West.
Both films are based on the 2003 same-name musically. The film is also inspired by the bestselling novel by Gregory Maguire.
Why is there a need for the musical film Wicked Part 2?
Wicked Part 2 is a film adaptation of the Tony-winning Broadway musical based on Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel. The film resurrects the characters of The Wizard of Oz. The original stage show was split into two acts, which is why the filmmakers also decided to divide the film into two, with "Defying Gravity" marking the end of Part 1.
Director Jon M. Chu announced his decision to split Wicked into two films on social media in April 2022. He explained that this would allow the filmmakers to go into more detail about the plot, characters, and songs without having to cut any of it for a single film.
He wrote,
“As we tried to cut songs or trim characters, those decisions began to feel like fatal compromises to the source material that has entertained us all for so many years. So we decided to give ourselves a bigger canvas and make not just one Wicked movie, but TWO!!!! With more space, we can tell the story of Wicked as it was meant to be told while bringing even more depth and surprise to the journeys of these beloved characters.”

What will Wicked Part 2 focus on?
Wicked Part 2 picks up where Part One left off, after Elphaba and Glinda learn that the Wizard is not what he seems, and Elphaba is now seen as the enemy of Oz.
This chapter explains the events leading up to The Wizard of Oz, showing how Elphaba becomes the Wicked Witch of the West and how Glinda becomes the Good Witch.
In this new Wicked Part 2 situation, Glinda is now Glinda the Good, an icon of hope for the people of Oz. Nessarose has become the Mayor of Munchkinland; the Wizard and Madame Morrible's campaign against Elphaba has intensified; and Fiyero is now the Wizard's Captain of the Guard, motivated more by a desire to help Elphaba than by loyalty to the Wizard.
When Glinda announces her engagement to Fiyero, he is not pleased and decides to continue to support Elphaba regardless of his fiancée's wishes. When Elphaba returns, however, it is to Munchkinland to see her sister Nessarose.
When Nessarose expresses her anger at Elphaba, Elphaba's efforts to do good fail once again. She then accepts her fate as the Wicked Witch of the West, the common enemy sought by the people of Oz.
