Ryan Gosling is in talks with the team for the new Star Wars film. It is being helmed by Shawn Levy and Jonathan Tropper. While Gosling has been a part of several big-budget films, he has not done a film in the Star Wars franchise.

If the talks actually materialize, we can expect Gosling to land a role in Levy and Tropper's upcoming Star Wars film which they have been working on for nearly two years. As per a report by Deadline, the said Star Wars film is not directly connected to the world of films between the first and the ninth episodes. This means that some new characters might be introduced as the story drifts away from Luke Skywalker. The film's production will reportedly begin in the fall of 2025.

Levy's last directorial outing was the 2024 Deadpool & Wolverine, starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. The film was a major commercial success for the studio. He writes his films with Tropper and the duo are also working on the next Star Wars film.

The upcoming film is being produced by Levy under the banner of 21 Lapse along with Lucasfilm and Kathleen Kennedy. Two Star Wars films are currently in the making including The Mandalorian and Grogu which will be released in 2026. Lately, the studio has also churned out shows based on the universe like The Book of Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Levy was supposed to direct another film for Paramount. However, things changed after Ryan Gosling showed his interest in the Star Wars universe.

If the project takes off, it would be the first Star Wars film since 2019's The Rise of Skywalker. Having Gosling as the lead will be the first time in the franchise's history that a star has been signed to play the protagonist. Throughout all the films, relatively unknown actors have been cast who then went on to become A-listers and popular among viewers. This includes names like Mark Hamill and Carrie Fischer.

Gosling was last seen in the action comedy film The Fall Guy in 2024. The film was loved by critics but ended up not doing well at the box office. He will be next seen in the sci-fi film Project Hail Mary and the crime mystery film The Actor. Even if things go as planned, we can expect the new Star Wars film to either be released in late 2026 or early 2027.

Interestingly, Gosling's name was thrown for a role in a Star Wars film back in 2013 when J.J. Abrams was handling the project. However, it did not materialize.
