Ryan Coogler's Sinners might be a big entry in the action-horror genre
Ryan Coogler is known to jump genres. He started his directing career with the 2013 biographical drama Fruitvale Station, which showed the last day of Oscar Grant in almost real time. We see how he went about his day until he was shot by a cop in the subway. This was followed by the sports drama Creed and the two Black Panther superhero films.
The versatile director has now come up with an action horror thriller that is set in the 1930s. He has also reunited with his long-time collaborator Michael B. Jordan. Ahead of its April 18 release, some critics have attended its screenings and the early responses have been positive. The film even clocked a 100% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes which is no small feat.
Besides being intense, the film is also touted to be heavy in the action-horror space. The genre has been more or less dead in recent years. However, with Sinners, we might witness a resurrection. A genre that was once cluttered with zombie flicks saw a slow decline with oversaturated projects. Coogler's handling of the project is expected to be a big and fresh entry in the same area.
Coogler remains one of the directors in Hollywood who has been consistently delivering clean-cut genre films. With him, tackling horror is exciting as it's backed by a well-written storyline that borders on real horror. Just like some of his earlier works, Sinners is not just a horror film. It is set during the Jim Crow era, and with it, the markers have tried to talk about real-life horrors with the undertone of racism and social segregation.
