Universal Pictures has finally released a trailer for Jurassic World Rebirth. It offers a peek into this latest franchise installment, and it sure looks scarier than ever. So, some fans are wondering whether the film is going to be rated R.

It doesn't seem particularly surprising considering the stylistic change in the upcoming film. The trailer for Jurassic World Rebirth promises a much darker and more vibrant world than its predecessors in this popular franchise. Rebirth is going to be a franchise reboot nearly three years after Chris Pratt-led Jurassic World Dominion. The events in this film are going to take place almost five years after the ones in Jurassic World Dominion.

Based on these details, some fans were wondering whether Jurassic World Rebirth would be rated R. After all, the upcoming film brings a darker update to the franchise and sets up the stage for a scarier chapter. Its recently released trailer also shows vibrant images of characters horrified by the danger in front of them. However, unlike what the speculations suggest, the film will likely not be rated R since it can impact the number of audiences allowed to watch the film. Instead, it might be rated PG-13 much like the successful predecessors in the franchise.

Let's dig more into the speculations that have surfaced online.

Jurassic World Rebirth promises a ride, which is characteristically darker and scarier than its previous chapters including the most recent Chris Pratt-led projects. So, it led to speculations about the film's rating and whether it would be R-rated. Before diving into those opinions, let's first get our facts straight.

The Motion Picture Association (MPA) in the United States allows four kinds of ratings for movies - G, PG, PG-13, and R. If a movie receives a PG-13 rating, that means some of its content may not be suited for children under 13. It may be a result of violence, strong language, drug use, or graphic content. However, if a movie is R-rated, the audience under 16 must attend the screening with an adult guardian since the movie will likely contain similar material without any restrictions.

Considering all these details, the upcoming Jurassic World film might be rated R for a few reasons. During an interview with Vanity Fair, director Gareth Edwards spoke about the film going back to its horror roots.

Jurassic Park is a horror film in the witness protection program. Most people don’t think of it like that. We all went to see it as kids. But I was scared shitless, to be honest, when I was at the cinema watching the T. rex attack. It’s one of the most well-directed scenes in cinema history, so the bar’s really high to come on board and try and do this.”

So, if the new Jurassic World film is committed to being a horror film, it might be meant for more mature audiences. However, there is another root for these speculations. In a few-month-old Reddit post, a user shared a leaked image of the film's logo. It showed the film having an R rating.

However, the franchise fans were quick to point out that this was a fake logo with an outdated font.

Another user pointed out that Alien Romulus, the Fede Alvarez directorial, was rated R despite being part of a big franchise. However, the same user acknowledged the financial risk behind an R-rated project:

Much like Fede Alvarez, Gareth Edwards is entering his franchise's universe for the first time. Alvarez had previously worked on horror films like Don't Breathe and Evil Dead, whereas Edwards has worked on Godzilla and Monster. They both have distinct cinematic styles.

Based on the Jurassic World Rebirth trailer, Edwards' creative input is potentially shaping the franchise in a new direction and shaping it to be more vibrant and horrific. Still, while more frightening, Jurassic World Rebirth will likely not be rated R because it would affect the number of audiences who can watch the film - which can limit the film's box-office collection.

As a result, Universal Pictures will likely not deviate from its past strategy as the previous installments of the Jurassic Park franchise were mostly rated PG-13. If any, it may include some warnings for its intense violent sequences or in case of the use of strong language.
