Will Interstellar 2 ever happen? Possibilities explored

Hoping for Interstellar 2 is like asking a chef to prepare another one of that cuisine to eat so it'll waste the time of the chef and we may not be able to eat it. Chances are, it won't have the same essence. On the contrary, it may end up staining the chef's image, and we shall be the ones splashing those stains if we don't like the cuisine.

Christopher Nolan's 2014 film had an ambiguous ending, which means that doesn't really have an obvious meaning. And it certainly doesn't mean that Nolan planned it like that so there can be a sequel. If that were the case, we would have the second Inception film; we don't. As per reports, there is no possibility of making the Interstellar sequel right now.

However, it depends on Warner Bros. and Paramount Pictures to decide who owns the copyrights to the film. There were some tensions between Nolan and Warner Bros. owing to the latter's decision to put into fruition the hybrid release model for their films with HBO Max in 2021.

What are the chances of Interstellar 2 coming into fruition?

Christopher Nolan and WB sorted their issues, it seems, as Michael De Luca has expressed interest in working with the acclaimed director again. However, we can't say for sure if that project is going to be Interstellar 2 even if they join hands together again.

Then the history speaks for itself, as Nolan never created a sequel outside of The Dark Knight trilogy. That too was a result of Nolan wanting to tell the origins of Batman, which was never seen before in the films featuring the wealthy American industrialist in Gotham City.

But it's not like Christopher Nolan is a total no for sequels. In one interview with the Associated Press, he explained that,

"There is always a balance in Hollywood between established titles that can ensure a return and give people more of what they want. That's always been a big part of the economics of Hollywood."

That said, there can always be a sequel; it just has to make sense. So we can say that Interstellar 2 is a possibility but that solely depends on future discussions, if they happen.

Why Interstellar 2 could turn out to be a bad idea?

It's simple: fans are just about satisfied with the movie and many aren't down to an Interstellar follow-up. Even if the team involved returns, fans are still intact with no sequel at all.

A Reddit thread sheds more light on this. In a fan-based subreddit of the film, someone asked if people were down for Interstellar 2, and the responses turned out to be out of favor for the film.

One fan said,

"Nope, even if it was the same crew and majority of the same actors I just dont see the upside..."

Another fan explained that no sequel for the film is needed. He said,

"This one was so good its a 100% rewatch (no matter how many times over), no follow up needed, no follow up wanted, please leave this alone."

There is a section of fans that would want to see a sequel coming to fruition, but everything depends on the story that needs to connect. When something is already perfect, like in Nolan's movie, adding to it has a chance of losing its essence. Interstellar is a wrap and unwrapping for further touch-up may end up pretty poor. Though chances are less if Christopher Nolan is overseeing it.
