Amazon MGM Studios announced the sequel to Road House (2024) in the summer of 2024 after it became the most-watched Amazon MGM Studios-produced debut film. The Jake Gyllenhaal-starrer action thriller movie Road House was released on March 21, 2024, on Amazon Prime. As per a report by Deadline, it had 50 million views within two weeks of its debut, even though it was the reboot of the 1989 cult classic film.

While the 1989 Road House was directed by Rowdy Herrington, the reboot version was directed by Doug Liman. Amazon's Road House features the BAFTA winner Jake Gyllenhaal as Elwood Dalton, an ex-UFC fighter turned head bouncer. The plot is based on how Dalton protects the Florida Road House from dangerous criminals. The movie is filled with action-packed and adrenaline-rushing sequences, and it touches on the themes of redemption, justice, and survival.

Road House 2 was announced by Amazon MGM Studios at the Upfronts event in New York back in 2024. Except for confirming Jake Gyllenhaal's role as Elwood Dalton for Road House 2, no more details were given out. The production house kept the plot, director, cast, and writer all under wraps. However, it did mention the reason for the sequel, and it was mostly due to Road House's massive success.

However, as per a report by CinemaCon on X via Pluck News, Aladdin and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword helmer Guy Ritchie is in talks to be the director for Road House 2. Although there is no official confirmation from Amazon MGM Studios whether Ritchie will be directing the Jake Gyllenhaal-starrer action movie or not.

Apart from that, as per CinemaCon on X via Pluck News, Will Beall is developing/writing the script for Road House 2. Beall is a popular screenwriter and a former LAPD detective, popular for his projects, including Aquaman (2018), Gangster Squad (2013), and many more. Road House (2024) was written by the duo Anthony Bagarozzi and Chuck Mondry.

Guy Ritchie is in talks to join Road House 2 as a director

Guy Ritchie and Jack Gyllenhaal have worked together in the past. Viewers have seen the duo create magic in the action drama The Covenant (2023). They have also paired up for another upcoming action movie, In The Grey, starring Henry Cavill and Eiza Gonzalez, which is set to be released on August 8, 2025.

Guy Ritchie's film provides a unique blend of comedy, twists, and drama. His portrayal of the characters feels fresh and quirky at the same time. Some of the notable projects of the 56-year-old director include The Gentleman (2019), Sherlock Holmes (2009), and Wrath of Man (2021).

Moreover, it was quite clear that Doug Liman might not be a part of Road House 2 after the SXSW premiere of Road House. His rift with the Amazon MGM studios was quite clear, as he did not want the movie to have an OTT release. Liman said that the production house promised a theatrical release while signing him. Liman opened up about not being compensated for Road House. He told IndieWire.

"My issue on Road House is that we made the movie for MGM to be in theatres, everyone was paid as if it was going to be in theatres, and then Amazon switched it on us and nobody got compensated. Forget about the effect on the industry-50 million people saw Road House-I didn't get a cent, Jake Gyllenhall didn't get a cent, Joel didn't get a cent."

With Doug Liman parting ways with the Road House franchise, viewers might get to see the duo—Guy Ritchie and Jake Gyllenhaal—for the third time.
