Drew Hancock's Companion was a thrilling watch covering the scary elements of science's advancement and the dangers of science being turned into something humanistic. Marketed as a horror comedy, the film draws relevances from science fiction films while exposing the audience to a futuristic plot that will keep you glued to your seats.

Companion has opened to mostly positive reviews, thanks to Hancock's brilliant direction and Sophie Thatcher's eerie portrayal of a companion robot. However, the film stayed with fans even after the credits rolled. The mid-credits scene in the film built hope among fans for a potential sequel as we see the robot companion Iris leaving her owner's clutch and achieving freedom.

But is Hancock creating a sequel? The director clarified that he is not.

Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, the Companion director denied having any intentions of working on a sequel for the film and talked about how he would like to leave it as it is.

“Warner Bros. wouldn’t want me to write my sequel. The story of Companion, as far as I see it, is in this movie. That’s as far as I want to take it, for sure."

Drew Hancock is currently working on a reimagined version of Robert Rodriguez’s 1998 sci-fi horror film, The Faculty.

What is Companion about?

The film follows Josh, played by Jack Quaid, and his partner, Iris, played by Thatcher, as they go for a getaway with friends to a secluded cabin. The audience is soon shown light of the fact that Iris is a robotic companion and is being used by Josh to achieve his greedy desires and inhumanity.

The film explores many films that its predecessors have explored in previous science fiction films. Subservience saw Megan Fox's Alice learning human feelings of jealousy over her owner's husband as she attempts to destroy everything for her desires. Her saw Scarlett Johanson's Samantha catering to a lonely man's misery, something that results in complex feelings between the two as they reach unchartered territory.

Similarly, Companion follows Alice as she soon faces her desire for freedom and breaks free from Josh's ownership. Her realization of the powers she holds and how she learns to take possession of her strength drives the climax of the film, where she sets herself free takes all of Josh's money with her, and starts a new life afresh, without human constraints controlling her.

At its heart, Companion is a masterful portrayal of the threats scientific progression holds and the responsibilities we as humans hold as the bearers of control over everything robotic. Hancock's storytelling is stellar, as are the performances in the film. It's certainly a delightful watch and one that will stay with you long after the credits roll.
