Speculations about whether Captain America 5 is on the table or not are natural to pop up after Anthony Mackie officially became the shield bearer in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) with Captain America: Brave New World. However, the chances of that happening are not looking very good, as it isn't performing as expected.

With the latest Julius Onah movie, the MCU now has a couple of franchises having four films, the other being Thor, where rumors in the air speak about a potential fifth movie in it. That will be something to look forward to for Captain America if it actually comes into fruition.

Will Anthony Mackie remain in the MCU as the titular superhero? Yes, he is planning to, that too for many more years to come. But that doesn't necessarily mean there will be a fifth movie in the series; he may be a recurring character. But there's a high likelihood of him appearing in Avengers: Secret Wars.

Does Captain America: Brave New World set up a sequel?

That can be a tricky question when we are talking about the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But the obvious answer is no, it doesn't set up a sequel. The film wraps up the story at the end, but it did set the stage for the Multiversal Saga, where the Leader is now a key to understanding the multiverse.

Interestingly, it did that and brought The Incredible Hulk (2008) again in limelight which was almost forgotten. That said, it does open ways for Red Hulk, but we cannot say the same for Captain America 5. But again, we have to consider the fact that an MCU story is a culmination of multiple comic book stories, which we can confirm by what Mackie said to Collider.

We did see Bucky Barnes appearing in the end, who offered some words of wisdom to Wilson. This could be a hope for Captain America 5, as it will keep the hero going. But again, they are all speculation.

Fans need to know this: if Marvel Studios makes plans for another solo Captain America film, they will find a way.

What are the chances of Captain America 5 happening?

In case fans are hoping that Bucky Barnes might become the titular hero in Captain America 5, if that happens, then they need to save that for the last. He is most certainly Captain America material, but the one we saw in The First Avenger was more fitting to this role.

But what can truly give the fans hope for Captain America 5 is that Anthony Mackie plans to stay in the MCU for like 10 years. And he did hint at another potential solo outing as the flying cap. He told Esquire earlier this January that

"I give it a solid ten years. You have the two Avengers movies, you have hopefully another Captain America, and then random plug-and-plays: Oh, Spider-Man! Oh, Fantastic Four! What are you doing here? But you never know. I mean, I don’t want to be a sixty-year-old Captain America."

Mackie is already 46 years, four months, and 23 days old as we write this, so we know what he means. Isiah Bradley (Carl Lumbly) sure was cool, but we are pretty sure the audience isn't up for that version of Captain America.
