The franchise began in 2014 when the first film was released. It was directed by Paul King who also wrote the screenplay and co-wrote the script with Hamish McColl. Based on the titular Paddington bear that has appeared in Michael Bond's children's books, the film has Ben Whishaw lending his voice to the bear. Other cast members of the film include Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Julie Walters, and Jim Broadbent among others.

It follows an anthropomorphic bear who lands in London from the jungles and gets adopted by a family in the city. The film was released on November 28, 2014, and became a success. It was followed by Paddington 2 which came out on November 10, 2017, and had a similar success. Paddington in Peru is the third installment that came out on November 8, 2024. Just like the previous installments, the film emerged as a success.

Dougal Wilson took over the directorial helm from Paul King in the third installment. He spoke to Radio Times about the nervousness he had while taking the responsibility. He said,

"I'm not sure excited was the right word, I think terrified is probably more accurate! Because those two first films are so beloved and they're so good. When I was approached to get involved, I was very anxious about trying to continue the quality of those two films, but I was joining a great team who had been involved in the first two films."

He further added,

"Paul had a hand in the story, and I also had the help of the fantastic animation director Pablo Grillo and the same cinematographer, Erik Wilson, but I was excited about all the the fantastic people I was going to be working with, and all the the amazing scenes we were going to try and create. But the story and the heart of the film I never relaxed about, because I thought we've got to get this right, and this has got to be a worthy successor."
