Wicked director Jon M. Chu reveals why they had to change the name of the sequel 

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo's starrer Wicked has been all the rage ever since its release, making it one of the biggest films of the year. Garnering not just immense praise from fans and critics everywhere, the film has also led to nominations in all the major award ceremonies for Grande and Erivo's performances as Glinda and Elphaba and Jon M. Chu's masterful direction.

As the success of the two-part franchise reaches the roof, speculations surrounding the nature of the film's counterpart have also been surfacing as fans are already anticipating the sequel and everything it will bring to the table.

The sequel, as it was revealed earlier, will be called Wicked: For Good, and although fans expected the film to simply be called Wicked: Part Two, director Jon Chu defended the decision for the change in the sequel's name.

Talking to Variety, Chu said,

“Who wants a movie called ‘Wicked: Part Two’? On the script, it always said, ‘For Good,’ and so it was just a point of like, ‘Do we really want to call this “Part Two”?’ And nobody wants that. I mean, that’s the destination. ‘For Good,’ we know, is like, ‘Where are we going with this movie? Let’s finish this thing.’”

What can fans expect from Wicked: For Good?

The first film of the franchise managed to live up to more than what fans expected from it, and thebuild-upp for the sequel has been on the rise ever since it was announced.

Although not much has been revealed about the sequel to Wicked, the film's cast has been dropping hints and Easter eggs on what to expect from the sequel. Jonathon Bailey, who plays Prince Fiyero, spoke to IndieWire about the project and said,

“I think we understand the world and how it works [now]. I’m really excited for the tonal shift. The world gets heavier and more complicated and there’s just that pumping sense of hope and joy and resilience and all the things that we love about Elphaba’s journey that I can’t wait for.“

The second film is expected to focus on Glinda's journey of becoming the Good Witch and Elphaba's of becoming the Wicked Witch. As NBC stated,

"The first tells how Elphaba becomes the Wicked Witch of the West, and the second tells how her best friend, Glinda, becomes authentically good.”

When is Wicked: For Good coming out?

Wicked: For Good is set to release on 21st November, 2025. More details on the sequel are awaited as of now.

Jon Chu also spoke about why he decided to split the film into two parts as he said,

"As we tried to cut songs or trim characters, those decisions began to feel like fatal compromises to the source material that has entertained us all for so many years. So we decided to give ourselves a bigger canvas and make not just one Wicked movie, but TWO!!!! With more space, we can tell the story of Wicked as it was meant to be told while bringing even more depth and surprise to the journeys of these beloved characters.”
