The Netflix documentary Sweet Bobby: My Catfish Nightmare raises questions in viewers' minds. The question lingers as to why Simran Bhogal allegedly catfished Kirat Assi for nine years, pretending to be a doctor named Bobby Jandu. Though she never volunteered to explain the allegations against her, she refused to be interviewed by the filmmakers for their documentary and Alexi’s podcast on the case.

Kirat, who was a victim of the catfishing scam, has a theory or two; those who were victimized by her alleged actions also have their interpretation of the case.

This article looks at the possible reasons given by Kirat and other victims in Sweet Bobby: My Catfish Nightmare for being catfished by Simran using Bobby's false identity.

Sweet Bobby: My Catfish Nightmare: Theories behind why Simran Bhogal catfished Kirat Assi

1) Simran took Kirat as a challenge

Simran never cleared the air with her cousin behind her true intentions. Kirat, to date, feels it could be power and has talked about it in Sweet Bobby: My Catfish Nightmare. Kirat feels that Simran took her as a challenge. The alleged catfisher had strong control over Kirat's life with her false identity of Bobby behind the screens, with whom Kirat had fallen in love, assuming him to be real. Simran, as Bobby, in their relationship's later stages, kept an eye on Kirat's activities and controlled her decisions.

Kirat then describes further scenarios where fake Bobby would ask her where she was. He would even ask her a series of questions about why she was not at home when she was out. And he would doubt if she was flirting with her co-hosts on her radio shows. According to Kirat, Simran successfully got the fake persona to interfere with the radio jockey's work and create a rift between her and her loved ones, including her family.

2) Simran imitating Bobby was mere entertainment for her

Kirat felt slightly skeptical about this, but she still believed in this reason. There is no doubt as to why Kirat Assi might feel this way after being catfished by her cousin for almost nine years. Simran tried to imitate a person, creating a whole world of fake individuals for Kirat, including Bobby’s co-workers and family members.

Eventually, Kirat formed a strong bond with Bobby and his friends on Facebook (whom she didn’t know to be fake). Kirat had also included her family in the process, as all they wanted for their daughter was to settle down, and they believed they had nothing to be skeptical of. But once aware of the truth, Kirat thinks it might have been a source of entertainment for Simran because she had been there and seen her struggle in the relationship.

3) Simran suffered from extreme self-esteem issues

One hypothesis here may be that Simran had low self-esteem. It could have been one way she sought validation from her older, successful cousin. Also, on searching more about Simran's personal life, it was discovered that she had a history of lying to people on social media.

4) Simran issued a letter to the court explaining her actions as a cause of family dispute

Describing it as a "family dispute" that occurred a decade ago when Simran Bhogal was a schoolgirl, The Mirror reported that she had written a letter to the court explaining her actions.

"She is losing that too, in addition to the health problems she has suffered in this case," her lawyer said.

5) Kirat believes that Simran was in a dark place

Kirat believes Simran came from a dark place, so she resorted to catfishing. Though the sisters are not in contact, that doesn’t mean Kirat has forgiven and forgotten the incident. She is still haunted by the fake life that has revolved around her for about nine years. Kirat doesn’t wish to stay in contact with her sister but wants Simran to take responsibility for her actions.
