Wolf Man is a horror film that was released on January 17, 2025. Initially, Ryan Gosling was supposed to star in this Leigh Whannell-directorial project. However, due to scheduling conflicts, the First Man actor could not star in Wolf Man.
Wolf Man is a modern spin on the 1941 horror film The Wolf Man which is considered by many as a classic. It is regarded as one of the earliest gothic horror films of Hollywood. The involvement of Gosling in the reboot had reportedly intrigued many fans.
Wolf Man is about a family trying to hide away from a force which is actually a werewolf. Eventually, the guardian of the family gets infected and slowly starts transitioning into the entity he was trying to protect his family from.
Here's the official synopsis of the film:
"A family at a remote farmhouse is attacked by an unseen animal, but as the night stretches on, the father begins to transform into something unrecognizable."
Why did Ryan Gosling not star in Wolf Man?
Wolf Man was initially announced in 2020 and had gone through several delays and setbacks in production. Its announcement happened right after Leigh released The Invisible Man which became a success. Ryan Gosling's name was also in the news as the lead actor. But he soon left the project without any explanation from the makers or the actor.
Gosling's replacement was Christopher Abbott who plays the lead role of Blake Lovell, a character that later on transforms into a wolf man. Speaking to Cinemablend, director Leigh Whannell explained that Gosling's schedule had changed which is why he could not be a part of the film. He also stated that the exit of the La La Land actor did not impact the storyline of Wolf Man. Whannell said:
"No, it's pretty much the same thing. It was really, you know... when I was working with Ryan, it was the similar story that you see now. It was the isolation of the same characters. It's just that so much time went by, there was these strikes and all this stuff happened. All of a sudden, Ryan's schedule changed."
Speaking of getting Abbott on board, the director said:
But I'm happy we got Christopher Abbott. He is so great in the role. I think he brought this to life better than I could have hoped for."
