Dexter is one of Showtime's hit crime drama series, which aired from October 1, 2006 to September 22, 2013. The show is set in Miami, following the story of Dexter Morgan- the adoptive son of a Miami Police Officer Harry Morgan(James Remur), played by Michael C. Hall.

While acknowledging the traumatic experiences that Dexter had experienced and subsequently his psychopathic tendencies, Harry trained him to use his gruesome bloodlust to punish only the heinous criminals who pass through the criminal justice system.

He also advised Dexter to be cautious and not get caught and never to get emotionally attached to the victims. The introduction of a new character named Lumen Pierce, played by Julia Stiles eventually made his guard down, and he broke one of the most important rules taught by his father.

Stiles joined Dexter in season 5 with the character Lumen Ann Pierce- a portrayal that gave her Emmy and Golden Globes nods. In a sense, her character Lumen felt like an ideal addition that would fit Dexter's life.

This, however, made it all the more surprising that she left very soon never to return. Many fans were disappointed about this, but Lumen's exit always seemed planned from the start and was logical for her character.

Lumen Pierce seemed like one of the most compatible love interests for Dexter and between them. But after slaying the last of the Barrel Girl Gang members, Lumen did not want to continue a life full of cruelty and violence and wanted to leave everything behind.

This also meant leaving Dexter behind. Dexter executive producer Sara Colleton told Entertainment Weekly that the writers had always known that Lume would eventually leave Dexter. She further added:

"He understands that her dark passenger has left, that her need for vengeance has been quenched, and that he can never escape this, this is who he is, and he needs to let her go."

Lumen's ending suggests that Dexter can put an end to his gory deeds, but at the same time, it is obvious that he has been engulfed by the darkness for more time than she has been in it. However, it also showed an optimistic perspective for Dexter and his son.

Actress Julia Stiles, who starred in The 10 Things I Hate About You, gave a memorable performance as Lumen Pierce in Dexter. Lumen was first introduced in the first episode of the fifth season.

When Dexter follows a serial killer by the name of Boyd Fowler to his residence and kills him, Dexter finds Lumen, one of the intended victims of Boyd. She reveals to him that Fowler is only a small part of a bigger evil entity.

Once she came to know about Dexter's code of killing, she became his sidekick to wipe out a whole lot of killers one by one. Lumen then became romantically involved with Dexter towards the end of their joint work while the two continued to hunt serial killers. But eventually decided to leave Dexter and her traumatic past, at the end of the season.
