Beyoncé has been releasing numerous music videos since her 2003 solo debut. However, she suddenly began pulling herself away from the scene leaving fans puzzled. She finally broke her silence in a GQ interview on September 9, 2024, and revealed that she stopped making MVs to have fans focus on the 'voice.'
The singer also highlighted the rich history of music and instrumentation, while hinting at how it takes longer to be digested and understood by the masses. Looking back at her recent albums - Renaissance and Cowboy Carter - the singer said she stopped making MVs because her music needed a breathing space of its own.
Appearing at the GQ cover story interview, Beyoncé briefly explained the reasons for not making any music videos recently:
“I thought it was important that during a time where all we see is visuals, that the world can focus on the voice.”
The Grammy-winning singer continued:
“The music is so rich in history and instrumentation. It takes months to digest, research, and understand. The music needed space to breathe on its own.”
A look at Beyoncé's recent album amid the singer breaking silence about not making music videos
Beyoncé is currently working on the Renaissance trilogy. She released her seventh album, and the first of the trilogy, Renaissance, in July 2022. The project was recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic and aimed at inspiring the joy of life and escapism in a world that was in isolation.
The 14-track album comprised some of the most celebrated songs in recent times, including - I'm That Girl, Cozy, Energy, Break My Soul, Heated, and more. Despite having no MVs, the album sold over 332,000 album-equivalent units soon after its release. It debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart, while also sitting atop the UK Albums chart, SNEP Albums chart, ARIA Albums chart, and more.
Beyoncé followed up the success of Renaissance with the second act of the trilogy, Cowboy Carter, which came out on March 29, 2024. The Country and Americana album embraced the contributions of Black pioneers to the rich American culture and musical history.
Cowboy Carter comprised hit tracks like - American Requiem, Blackbird, Protector, Daugther, Oh Louisiana, and more. The album topped the US Billboard 200 chart with the sale of over 407,000 album-equivalent units. It also debuted at no. 1 on Billboard's Folk Albums, and Top Country Albums charts.
Beyoncé released no music videos for Cowboy Carter either.
The singer said that visuals keep fans from enjoying the brilliance of a singer's voice and the quality of the music. She hinted at the importance of listeners embracing the music while highlighting the efforts and details that go into making an album.
The Crazy in Love singer who seems to be focusing more on the instrumental and vocal segments, said that music should be enough. She hinted at how fans enjoying her music are the real visuals:
"The music is enough. The fans from all over the world became the visual. We all got the visual on tour.”
Beyoncé is currently working on the third and final act of the Renaissance trilogy. As of this writing, the project is not confirmed to have a title or a speculated release date.
