In a recent interview with the Boston radio station WBUR, Aerosmith bassist Tom Hamilton expressed hope for the band’s return. He also shared an update on lead singer Steven Tyler’s vocal injury.

Hamilton said:

“Steven’s healing process is going really, really well, but it goes at its own pace,” and added: “Maybe Aerosmith will do something in the future, but it’s a big if and the last thing I want to be doing is to try and push Steven in that direction. If we do anything in the future, it would come from him.”

Aerosmith announced their decision to retire from touring in August 2024, following Tyler’s surgery when he fractured his larynx at a concert the year before. The band, which rose to fame in the mid-1970s, was formed in Boston. It comprised Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Tom Hamilton, Joey Kramer, and Brad Whitford.

But, after several hits, Aerosmith broke up in 1979 over a glass of milk. According to a report in The Shark 105.3, a fight broke out during a concert, when Joe Perry’s wife poured a glass of milk at Tom Hamilton’s wife while the band was performing on stage. Read on to know how the incident resulted in Aerosmith breaking up.

It is strange how an incident involving a glass of milk at a concert in Cleveland led to a five-year split for Aerosmith, from 1979 to 1984.

According to a report in Every Record Tells A Story, Joe Perry’s wife Elyssa poured milk over Tom Hamilton’s wife Terry during a backstage argument while Aerosmith were onstage. When Perry learned about the fight involving his wife, he decided to leave Aerosmith.

Perry formed the Joe Perry Project and, after releasing three solo albums, he reconciled with Aerosmith in 1984, as a report in Every Record Tells A Story mentioned, and the band released a new album, titled Done With Mirrors in 1985.

Over the years, Aerosmith's fame has skyrocketed with the release of albums such as Toys in the Attic (1975), which includes classic hits like Sweet Emotion and Walk This Way, and Rocks (1976), which features evergreen numbers such as Back in the Saddle and Last Child.

Aerosmith made a comeback in the late 1980s and 1990s with multi-platinum albums such as Permanent Vacation (1987) and Pump (1989). They won their first Grammy in 1991 for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal for “Janie’s Got a Gun”, according to a report in American Songwriter.

Aerosmith co-headlined the Super Bowl in 2001 with *NSYNC, Britney Spears, Nelly, and Mary J. Blige, added the report. In 2023, the band announced its final tour, Peace Out: The Farewell Tour. However, the tour was reportedly postponed to 2024 as Tyler suffered from a vocal chord injury.

On August 3, 2024, Aerosmith announced the decision to retire from the “touring stage” through an Instagram post that read:

“As you know, Steven’s voice is an instrument like no other. He has spent months tirelessly working on getting his voice to where it was before his injury. We’ve seen him struggling despite having the best medical team by his side. Sadly, it is clear, that a full recovery from his vocal injury is not possible. We have made a heartbreaking and difficult, but necessary, decision - as a band of brothers - to retire from the touring stage.”

The band thanked their fanbase for their support and wrote:

“Thanks to you, our Blue Army, that spark caught flame and has been burning for over five decades. Some of you have been with us since the beginning and all of you are the reason we made rock 'n’ roll history.”

While Aerosmith’s future is uncertain as of now, Tom Hamilton has been working with a new band called Close Enemies. The group includes Peter Stroud, Tony Brock, Trace Foster and Chasen Hampton.
