The American author Stephen King wrote the novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption.


The novella was turned into a play and movie, both of which are called The Shawshank Redemption. In the movie, Morgan Freeman plays Red, while Tim Robbins plays Andy. The 1995 67th Academy Awards saw the film adaptation receive seven Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Freeman.


In the movie, Tim Robbins plays banker Andy Dufresne, who, despite his determination that he is innocent, is given a life sentence at Shawshank State Penitentiary for the killings of his wife and her lover. During the next twenty years, he makes friends with Ellis "Red" Redding (Morgan Freeman), a fellow prisoner and contraband smuggler, and plays a key role in a money laundering scheme run by prison warden Samuel Norton (Bob Gunton). James Whitmore, Gil Bellows, William Sadler, and Clancy Brown all play supporting parts.

American author Stephen Edwin King was born on September 21, 1947. He has been dubbed the "King of Horror" and is well-known for his horror books. He is most known for his novels, but he also wrote about 200 short tales, the majority of which have been published in collections.


King's first professionally written short story, "The Glass Floor," was sold to Startling Mystery Stories in 1967. After graduating from the University of Maine with a high school teaching certificate, he had trouble immediately finding work.


He submitted his short stories to Cavalier and other magazines. Some of these early stories were reprinted in Night Shift (1978). In 1971, King began teaching English at the Hampden Academy in Hampden, Maine. Nevertheless, he created original concepts and published short stories, including the unreleased anti-war story Sword in the Darkness.


King has received many awards, including the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Mystery/Thriller for 11/22/63 (2011) and the O. Henry Award for "The Man in the Black Suit" (1994). He has also won awards for his overall literary achievements, including the 2003 Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, the 2014 National Medal of Arts, and the 2007 Grand Master Award from the Mystery Writers of America.
